徳川刑部卿（宗尹）様——東照宮の御玄孫、吉宗様の第四男——の御嫡子。御母は、刑部卿様の御簾中・俊君様（一条准后様の御息女）。
宗矩様の御養子となられる。

He is the legitimate heir of Lord Tokugawa Gyōbukyō (Muneyori)—the great-great-grandson of Tōshō-gū [Tokugawa Ieyasu] and the fourth son of Lord Yoshimune—His mother is the consort of Lord Gyōbukyō, Lady Toshi-no-Kimi (a daughter of Lord Ichijō Juigō).
He was adopted as the heir of Lord Munenori.
