たとえば、本座（測量の基点）を真ん中として、四方四十間の面積を測りたい場合は、まず白紙一枚を四方同じ寸法に裁ち、仮にこれを四十間四方の模型（縮図）と定める。（なお、四方が同じ寸法であれば、その紙の大小は問わない。たとえば紙面が八寸四方であれば、二歩を一間とし、二寸を十間とし、八寸を四十間と定め、この縮尺をもって開きの間数を量る。）

**Method** (explained with reference to the diagrams drawn below):
For example, when one wishes to measure a square area of forty *ken* on each side, with the base station (*honza*) at the center, first take a single sheet of white paper and cut it into a square of equal dimensions on all four sides, provisionally designating this as the model (scaled diagram) of a forty-*ken* square. (Note: as long as the paper is square, the actual size of the paper does not matter. For instance, if the paper surface is eight *sun* square, one may set two *bu* as one *ken*, two *sun* as ten *ken*, and eight *sun* as forty *ken*, and use this scale to measure the number of *ken* for the opening.)
As shown in the diagram, draw ink lines (*sumi*) across the paper from corner to corner in a cross (+) pattern. (These cross-shaped ink lines represent the four corners of the forty-*ken* square area.) Draw additional ink lines in the vertical direction as well, for the purpose of re-verification.
