In the autumn of the fifth year of Eiroku (1562), the peasants of Kaga Province (Kashū) rose up in revolt and turned against Asakura Saemon-no-kami Yoshikage, lord of Echizen. Originally, Kaga, Noto, and Etchū had for many years seen uprisings by the Ikko-ikki, who followed the Honganji of Osaka and refused to observe the laws of governance (of the Asakura). For this reason, in Kōji 1 (1555), Asakura Kongō Norikage, the lay monk Sōteki, was appointed commander, and fighting ensued, with the Tedori River as the boundary; half the province was brought under the control of Echizen (the Asakura). Due to this disorder, rice and grain from the northern provinces could not be transported to Kyoto, causing great hardship. Accordingly, by order of the Kubō, Lord Yoshiteru, Ōdate Saemon-no-suke and Takeda Jibu-no-shōyū descended upon Echizen bearing a御教書 (official missive), and mediated the conflict between the Asakura and the Honganji. In accordance with the Shōgun's will, it was agreed that Yoshikage's daughter would be given in marriage to Kyonyo, the head of the Honganji. As a result, Kaga was returned to the Honganji, and for a time peace prevailed. However, the lawless elements of Kaga again refused to transport their rice tributes to Osaka and behaved as they pleased. Kennyō, Kyonyo's father, informed the Asakura house of this matter, and orders were issued to Kaga, but they were not obeyed. Moreover,

the rebels constructed fortifications at places called Kashiwano, Sugiyama, Kurahashi, and Sendai, and obstructed traffic along the roads. Various people brought complaints to the lord (Yoshikage), and so once again Asakura Tosa-no-kami Kagetaka, the lord of Kitanoshō Castle, was appointed commander. A force of over three thousand eight hundred cavalry advanced into Kaga Province, including Shōrenga Ōmi-no-kami, Nojiri Shume-no-suke, Kurosaka Bichū-no-kami, Mizoe Ōi-no-suke, Buso Uneme, Fukamachi Zusho, and Hosorogi Satsuma-no-kami, among others. They encamped at Tsukitsu, Gokōzuka, Shō, Anata, and Shikichi, and dispatched a messenger to the rebels declaring, "Since you have broken your pledge, we shall promptly subjugate you." The leader of the Ikko-ikki of Oyama in Kahoku District, a man called Tsubosaka Hōki, sent back a reply stating that he believed this to be in error, and that after consulting with the people, they would comply with the orders as before. Accordingly, (the Asakura forces) allowed some time to pass; but then at the encampment of Shōrenga Ōmi-no-kami Kagetomo, to the east of Gokōzuka, a single column of vapor (ki) rose up and drifted southward. Akechi Jūbei Mitsuhide, who had been assigned to serve alongside Shōrenga, observed this martial omen and said to Kagetomo: "A single column of vapor rises in the east and encroaches upon the south—
