Because (Yoshitatsu) favored (his third son) Kenmotsu Ryūjō, Ryūoki harbored resentment, and a deep conflict arose between father and son. In the summer of the second year of Kōji (1556), (Ryūoki) watched for an opportunity while his father Yoshitatsu was away on a hunting excursion, and ordered his retainers Hine Oribe and Nagai Sukeemon to summon his two younger brothers under false pretenses and kill them. He then seized the main castle on Mount Inaba at Inokuchi and rose up against his father. Jōshū (Yoshitatsu) was alarmed, and since Oda Kazusa-no-suke Nobunaga of Owari Province was (Yoshitatsu's) son-in-law, he appealed for reinforcements; but as the distance was great, assistance could not be rendered in time. With only a small force, (Yoshitatsu) held his position at a place called Sagiyama and engaged his son in battle facing toward the castle of Inokuchi. In the end, he was defeated, and on the twentieth day of the fourth month of that same year (Kōji 2), Yamashiro-no-kami (Yoshitatsu), at the age of forty-eight, was slain in battle by his own son Ryūoki.
Akechi Hyōgo-no-suke Mitsuyasu, (who took the tonsure and the Buddhist name) Sōshuku, was a descendant in the seventh generation of Akechi Shimotsuke-no-kami Yorikane, a cadet-line scion of the Toki clan, and was the second son of Jūbei-no-jō Mitsutsugi. After his elder brother Mitsutuna died young, he garrisoned the castle at a place called Akechi in eastern Mino Province. After the Toki lord fell into straitened circumstances, he served Saitō Dōsan and was also on intimate terms with Yoshitatsu. For this reason, he was outraged at Ryūoki's murder of his father Yamashiro-

no-kami, and barricaded himself in the Akechi manor. Upon hearing this, Uhyōe-no-taifu (Ryūoki) appointed Nagai Hayato-no-suke as commander, and sent forth a force of over three thousand cavalry on the fifth day of the eighth month to assault Akechi, with Nikaidō Izumo-no-kami, Tōyama Tonomo-no-suke, Ōsawa Jirōzaemon, Ibi Suō-no-kami, Funaki Daigaku, Yamada Jirobei, and Iwata Shigedayū as the vanguard. The lay monk Sōshuku held the castle with only three hundred and eighty cavalry, despite being the lord of a domain worth ten thousand kan. In the end he could hold out no longer, and on the twenty-sixth day of the ninth month of that same year, he fell in battle alongside his younger brother Jirouemon-no-jō Mitsuhisa.
Akechi Jūbei Mitsuhide was the nephew of the lay monk Sōshuku. Before Sōshuku was killed in battle, he entrusted his own son Mitsuharu and his nephew Jirō Mitsutada to Jūbei Mitsuhide. Accordingly, Mitsuhide left the castle accompanied by his kinsmen, passed through Gujō District, crossed through Anama in Echizen Province, and wandered through various provinces. Thereafter he settled in Echizen, entered the service of Asakura Saemon-no-kami Yoshikage, and received a domain of five hundred kan.
