Through Nobunaga's goodwill, Mitsuhide was granted some 4,200 kanmon of forfeited lands (*kessho*) in Anpachi District, Mino Province. At this time, Mitsuhide was thirty-nine years of age. Having achieved military distinction in northern Ise, and after the submission of Kanbé, he was further rewarded with an additional stipend of 5,000 kanmon near Anpachi District, and rose to become a commander of five hundred mounted warriors.
Kuratani Gyōbu-no-tayū Tsugutomo was a descendant in the fourth generation of Daijō-daijin (Major Counselor) Yoshitsugu, the second son of Shogun Yoshimitsu. He was the grandson of Ubyōe-no-suke Tsugonochi and the son of Kamontō Tsugitoki. The lord of Rokuon-in (Yoshimitsu) had made light of his eldest son, Lord Yoshimochi, and doted upon Lord Yoshitsugu, even intending to pass the position of shogun to him. However, after Rokuon-in passed away in the summer of Ōei 15 (1408), Lord Yoshitsugu continued to live close to the capital, and in the spring of the twenty-fifth year (1418), the Major Counselor also passed from this world. His son Tsugonochi was left an orphan and, following family connections, went down to Echizen Province and settled in the vicinity of Ajimano. Known as the Kuratani御所 (Kuratani Palace), he was revered by the Asakura clan in a manner unlike any other. In particular, the daughter of Gyōbu-no-tayū

was the principal consort (*naisshitsu*) of Yoshikage, and so he was called the father-in-law of the lord (*yakata*). Being a man of great ability, he was respected throughout the entire domain.
Because Miyoshi Sakyō-no-dayū Yoshitsugu was young and inexperienced, his retainer Matsunaga Danjō Hisahide wielded power as he pleased, and eventually urged Yoshitsugu to revolt. On the nineteenth day of the fifth month of Eiroku 8 (1565), they attacked the palace (*miei-chū*) and assassinated the *kubō* (shogun), Lord Yoshiteru. His younger brothers were the Ichijō-in of the Southern Capital (Nara) and the Rokuon-in of the Kinkaku-ji. Rokuon-in Shūkō was also murdered, and assassins were dispatched to the Southern Capital. However, Kakkei (Yoshiaki) quickly fled into the Kasuga hills, thence passed through Iga Province, and made his way to Kōka in Ōmi Province. He took refuge in the residence of Wada Izumi-no-kami Hidemori, a retainer of Sasaki Shuri-no-tayū Yoshihide. Thereafter, he moved to Yajima village, renounced his vows, and came to be known as Lord Yoshiaki. Mitsukuri Sakyō-no-dayū Nyūdō Jōtei and his son, Uemon-no-jō Yoshisuke, having ties to the Miyoshi clan, forced Yoshiaki to slip away from Yajima village as well. He made his way to Obama in Wakasa Province and threw himself upon the mercy of Takeda Daizen-no-dayū Yoshimune.
