It was at this time that Horie Nakatsukasa-no-saburō Toshishige, who had been wandering as a refugee in Kaga, acting on the enticement of Miyoshi and Matsunaga in Kyoto, raised uprisings among the *ikki* of Kaga, Noto, and Etchū to harass the Asakura. The message sent to him promised that "if military merit is shown, Echizen shall be granted to you; Kaga, Noto, and Etchū shall be entrusted to the *ikki* forces." Horie was greatly delighted, massed his forces at Mattō in Kaga, and made preparations to invade Echizen from behind should the Asakura escort the *kubō* (Yoshiaki) on a march to the capital—

—taking advantage of their absence. Hearing of this, Yoshikage deliberated that they should station holding forces at the border crossings before proceeding to the capital. Since there were many routes from which forces from Kaga might advance, it would not be possible unless ten thousand men were left behind. The total mobilized strength of his house amounted to over twenty-three thousand, and the Takeda forces of Wakasa to thirty-five hundred, making approximately twenty-seven thousand in all; but if garrison forces were posted at various points, the remaining force would fall short of twenty thousand. Moreover, since the intentions of Shōtei (Rokkaku Shōtei) at Mitsukuri in Ōmi were difficult to gauge, debate raged inconclusively as to whether it would be wise to suddenly dispatch a large army.
Yoshiaki declared that if this was deemed to be of the utmost importance, he wished to seek the aid of Oda Kazusa-no-suke Nobunaga of Gifu in Mino Province. Yoshikage, though stating that he harbored no feelings of enmity toward Yoshiaki, said: "As for the *ikki* of the northern provinces, from my grandfather Sadakage and my father Takakage down to myself, they have already risen five times since the second day of the eighth month of Eishō 3 (1506). For this reason, I submit that Your Lordship should act as you see fit." Accordingly, Ueno Nakatsukasa-no-tayū Kiyonobu and Nagaoka Hyōbu-no-tayū Fujitaka were dispatched to Gifu. Nobunaga was greatly delighted, and declared: "What could be a greater honor for a warrior house than this?"—
