The commanders of the flanking force (*karamete*) were Miyoshi Sakyō-no-tayū Yoshitsugu, Matsunaga Danjō Hisahide, and Iwanari Chikara-no-suke Yukiyuki. They too led five thousand mounted men out from Wakae in Kawachi, and took up positions around Yawata, Yamazaki, and the area of Mukai-no-Myōjin. The main attacking force (*ote*) advanced on the early morning of the fifth day of the first month against the shogunal residence at Honkokuji in Rokujō. This marks the beginning of the Battle of Honkokuji.
On the side of the *kubō* (shogun Yoshiaki): [One unit] was headed by Hosokawa Uma-no-kami Haruyoshi, Ise Shimōsa-no-kami, and Ueno Sado-no-kami, with Akechi Jūbei Mitsuhide, Nikaidō Suruga-no-kami, and Iikawa Yamashiro-no-kami as military commanders, holding the position with 1,500 mounted men. A second unit under Niki Iga-no-kami Yoshimasa, Nose Tamba-no-kami, and Iikawa Higo-no-kami, with Tsuda Samanosuke Toshihisa, Tsuda Sakon, and Naitō Bitchū-no-kami as military magistrates (*gun-bugyō*), was stationed with 1,200 mounted men. A third unit under Ōdate Jibu-no-tayū Harutada, Mitsuchi Yamato-no-kami, Makishima Magokurō, and Soga Hyōgo-no-suke, with Nomura Etchū-no-kami Takakatsu, Yamagata Gennai, and Uno Yashichirō handling tactical maneuvers, held ready with 1,200 mounted men. And so on.
As the vanguard of the attacking force, Yakushiji Kurōzaemon, advancing to within about two *chō* of the castle walls, was met by Akechi Jūbei, who climbed a nearby—

—watchtower, took up a firearm, and shot Yakushiji through the breastplate, sending him tumbling from his horse. As his men stood aghast, Okumura Rokuzaemon and Murakoshi Magokurō and others opened the gate at the Yotsuji front and charged out, cutting down many enemy soldiers, and the Miyoshi forces fell into rout. At the same time, Nomura Etchū-no-kami, Yamagata Gennai, Uno Yashichi, Akaza Shichirōemon, and others sallied forth from within the enclosure and slew Iwanari Yasuke, Ichida Kaname-no-suke, and Nara Sakon. On the defending side as well, the brave warriors from Wakasa Province—Yamagata Gennai and Uno Yashichirō—fought with peerless valor before falling in battle.
After the defeat of the attacking force at the Battle of Honkokuji, Nobunaga ordered Niwa Gorōzaemon, Akechi Jūbei, and Kinoshita Tōkichirō to survey a site at the intersection of Nijō-dōri and Ōmiya, where a castle was to be built. As for the laying out of the castle plan (*nawabari*), while all three consulted together, Akechi Jūbei had, in years prior during his warrior-errantry (*musha shugyō*), received the complete transmission of the secret teachings of one Tsunokuma Echizen-nyūdō Sekison, a resident warrior of Bungo Province who was the foremost expert in military strategy and castle construction (*shiro-dori*) in all of Kyushu. For this reason, Mitsuhide served as the master planner of the castle layout. The twenty-seventh day of the second month of Eiroku 12 (1569).
