**[Right folio]** The ground-breaking ceremony (*kuwahajime*) was held, and the construction was quickly completed. On the sixth day of the fourth month, Shogun Yoshiaki moved into Nijō Castle. As rewards for distinguished service at the Battle of Honkokuji, Araki Kazue-no-suke Murashige was granted the province of Settsu and appointed Settsu-no-kami. Akechi Jūbei received an additional stipend (*kaon*) of three thousand *kan*, and three members of his clan—Akechi Yahei-ji Mitsuharu, Jirōemon Mitsutada, and Jūrōzaemon Mitsuchika—were summoned into service. After the completion of Nijō Castle and the move into it, Kinoshita Tōkichirō was stationed in Kyoto to guard the shogunal house, and on the thirteenth day of the fifth month, Nobunaga returned to his home province. In the middle of the second month of Genki 1 (1570), Tokugawa Mikawa-no-kami (personal name omitted) traveled for the first time from Hamamatsu in Tōtōmi to Gifu for an audience with Nobunaga. As the two were as close as brothers, Nobunaga rejoiced greatly and enormously. Taking this opportunity, it was decided that he should also pay his respects to the shogun in Kyoto, and in the early third month he went up to the capital and had an audience with Lord Yoshiaki. The matter thereafter concerned moving against the domain of Asakura Saemon-no-kami Yoshikage of Echizen, to request— **[Left folio]** —his assistance in chastising the Miyoshi. However, [Yoshikage] had used the pretext of an *ikki* uprising in Kaga Province to avoid accompanying the shogun on his journey to the capital, had sheltered and supported Saitō Uhyōe-no-tayū Tatsuoki, the former governor of Mino, and when the Miyoshi faction attacked the capital the previous spring, had even sent Tatsuoki forward as the commander of the vanguard. All of this was Asakura's doing. Furthermore, the remnants of the Sasaki clan and Azai Shimōtsuke-no-kami and his son, who would not follow Nobunaga's orders, relied on Yoshikage as their backing—and for these reasons, it was decided that he must be attacked and destroyed. In the deliberations over advancing into Echizen, Akechi Jūbei was ordered to provide guidance, as he had resided in Echizen in earlier years. Mitsuhide reported as follows: "[First,] the northern provinces road has three routes: the eastern Ōmi road, the western Ōmi road, and the Wakasa road. On the eastern Ōmi route through Ōshū, remnants of the Sasaki clan are spread across various places—Yokoyama, Nagahama, Yamaki, and Odani. On the western road there are enemies at Wani, Kido, Tanaka, and Shinshiro. Therefore, it would be most advisable to advance through the Wakasa route to Tsuruga in Echizen. In Wakasa Province, Ichimi Suruga-no-kami of Takahama in Ōi District has already surrendered to our side, and Takeda Yoshimune of Obama in the same province, who had been an enemy, has recently died, and his adopted son, Ukyō-no-suke Yoshiyori, is dim-witted—"
