恒星の中で微かで見えにくいものについても同様である。たとえば昴星（プレアデス星団）は、伝えるところによれば七つの星とされているが、これはただ肉眼で見える限りに基づいて定めたものに過ぎない。実際には三十七の星がある。鬼宿の四つの星の中央にある白い点（積尸気）は、伝えられるところでは「白い気（白気）」とされているが、実際には三十六の星がある。

The measurement and calculation of (Mercury's) motion is exceedingly difficult.
The same applies to those fixed stars (恒星) that are faint and difficult to see. For example, the Pleiades (昴星, Mǎo Xīng) have traditionally been described as "seven stars," but this was determined solely on the basis of what the naked eye can perceive. In reality, there are thirty-seven stars. The white spot in the center of the four stars of the Ghost Mansion (鬼宿, Guǐ Xiù) — the Exhalation of Piled Corpses (積尸気) — has traditionally been described as "white vapor (白気)," but in reality it consists of thirty-six stars.
Among the small and difficult-to-see stars are: the southern star within the Ox Mansion (牛宿), the Fish Star (魚星) to the east within the Tail Mansion (尾宿), the "legendary star" (伝説星), and the southern star of the Turtle Beak Mansion (觜宿). All of these lie at the sixth magnitude (the boundary of naked-eye visibility), and beyond that they are too faint to see. However, if one looks at them through a telescope, one sees many stars arranged in rows extending very far indeed. For example, the single star to the south of the Turtle Beak Mansion (觜宿) is in fact composed of twenty-one stars of varying sizes. Thus it may be seen that the fixed stars are without number.
Beyond the Three Enclosures (三垣), the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions (二十八宿), the three hundred asterisms (三百座), and the one thousand one hundred and sixty-six stellar offices (一千一百六十六官), the stars crowd together in confusion and disarray — and even a master reckoner (隷首) would find it difficult to exhaust their count.
