現代語訳
このごろ、この滑稽な小説を著している。その趣旨は河童の屁玉のようなもので、また狸のいびきに似ている。これを畳めば二巻、これを開けば十枚である。お菊の皿で欠けたものがあれば、見越しの松の首で余ったものもある。そこで蛍合戦の明かりを借りて、雪女の灯火を掲げ、切禿の筆を取って、いたずらに一つの盞の油を減らし、狐色の表紙をかけて、しかも綴じるのに三つ目の錐を用いる。言葉は化け物屋敷の日記のごとく、絵は珍物茶屋の簡易な版画に等しい。生臭い風の朝、そぼそぼと雨の降る夕べ、寂しい子供たち、この書籍をご覧になってお茶を召し上がってくださいということである。
