現代語訳
「それはない」という野暮な者が尊く、「見ぬ」という化け物は尊い。子供が大人となり、嫁が姑に化けるなど、さりとは不思議なことであるが、聞いて驚く人もなし。朝の豆腐屋は夕方の油屋と変じて、ついに化け物の油をげらげらと売り歩く。
人間の化けるのを人間が見ては、糸瓜の皮とも思わないが、化け物の方から見ては、これほど恐ろしいものはない。
ここに化け物の頭領三つ目入道は、近頃は箱根の先に隠居して、世を楽に暮らしていたが、ある日天気ものどかに晴れ、春風そよそよと吹いて、物寂しいままに友達を集め、人間の百物語を始める。化け物の方の百物語は、真昼間に行灯を灯し、さも子供衆の怪談会を据えるが如くなり。

英語訳
"That's not true," say the uncouth ones who are precious, and monsters who say "I haven't seen it" are precious. Children becoming adults, brides transforming into mothers-in-law - such strange things indeed, yet no one is surprised to hear of them. The morning tofu seller transforms into the evening oil seller, and finally walks about selling monster oil with hearty laughter.
When humans see humans transforming, they don't think it's even like a loofah skin, but from the monsters' perspective, there is nothing more terrifying than this.
Here, the leader of monsters, Three-Eyed Nyudo, has recently retired to a place beyond Hakone, living peacefully, but on a certain day when the weather was pleasantly clear and the spring breeze blew gently, feeling somewhat lonely, he gathered his friends and began telling one hundred tales about humans. The monsters' version of hyakumonogatari is conducted in broad daylight with lanterns lit, just like setting up a ghost story session for children.
