現代語訳
年老いたゴイサギが大千世界を見ようと四海に羽を打って出かけるが、びゅうびゅうと飛んで行くうちに目の限りなく年の波が穏やかであったので、傍らの岩に腰を掛けて羽を休めようとすれば、たちまち下から声がして「俺の甲羅に腰を掛けるのは何者だ」と呼ばわるので、ゴイサギは驚いて、これを見れば姿は梅干しを捏ねたようなお爺さんの年の劫（亀）なりければ、肝を潰して逃げ帰る。

英語訳
An aged night heron, wanting to see the great thousand worlds, spread its wings and set out across the four seas. Flying with a whooshing sound, as far as the eye could see the waves of the year were calm, so it tried to rest its wings by sitting on a nearby rock. Suddenly a voice came from below saying "What creature dares to sit on my shell?" The startled night heron looked down to see an old turtle whose appearance was like kneaded pickled plums - an ancient turtle of many years. The heron was so shocked it fled back home.
