《割書：我（わが）来（き）てゐる関塞（くわんさい）はさむい所なればかたから梅花（ばいくわ）を見るといふ事もなくいつが春（はる）やらしらねば｜梅花のおつるをもみるといふ事もないはづじやゆふべのころ胡（ゑびす）のものが来て吹（ふく）笛声（てきせい）の中に落梅（らくばい）｜の曲（きよく）を聞てあるが中〳〵都（みやこ）のやうに真（しん）の梅花をみる事はならぬ所じやわか故郷（こきやう）の労々亭（らう〳〵てい）のあたりは春も｜わたり梅も開（ひらい）てあるを帰（かへつ）てみたけれど夜々（やゝ）城（じやう）の軍陣（ぐんぢん）最中なれば道もさはがしくて帰ることもならぬ》

塞下曲 釈皎然
寒い辺境の砦には梅の花が落ちるのを見る理由もない
胡人が吹く笛の音に落梅の調べが聞こえてくる
労々亭の上では春がまさに訪れているだろう
夜ごと城南では戦いがまだ終わらない
《解説：私が来ているこの関所の砦は寒い所なので、元より梅の花を見るということもなく、いつが春なのかも分からないので、梅の花が散るのを見るということもないはずである。夕方頃、胡人（異民族）の者が来て吹く笛の音の中に落梅の曲を聞いているが、なかなか都のように本当の梅の花を見ることはできない所である。わが故郷の労々亭のあたりでは春も過ぎ、梅も咲いているのを帰って見たいけれど、夜ごと城での軍陣の最中なので、道も騒がしくて帰ることもできない》

《Commentary: The frontier fortress where I have come is a cold place, so naturally there is no opportunity to see plum blossoms, and since I don't even know when spring arrives, there should be no chance to see plum blossoms falling either. In the evening, barbarians come and in the sound of the flute they play, I hear the melody of "Falling Plum Blossoms," but this is a place where one can never see real plum blossoms as in the capital. Around Laolao Pavilion in my hometown, spring has passed and the plum blossoms are blooming—I would like to return to see them, but since we are in the midst of military campaigns at the castle night after night, the roads are turbulent and I cannot return home》
