古人で梅について論じた者は多いが、品種の区別に至っては、范氏の譜（梅譜）に及ぶものはない。それゆえ後世の人々はみなこれを拠り所としてきた。しかしながら（そこに収められた品種は）わずか十余種にすぎない。我が恕菴先生の『梅品』には六十余種が収録されており、まことに備わっていると言うべきであろう。思うに——

Among the ancients, there were many who wrote about plum blossoms, but when it comes to the classification and differentiation of varieties, none surpassed the *Meipu* (Plum Register) of Master Fan. For this reason, later generations have all relied upon it as their authority. However, it contained only some ten-odd varieties. Our Master Joan's *Baihin* records more than sixty varieties, and one may truly say that it is comprehensive. Indeed——
