こゝにたいこもちの伝介といふ
ものありいつたいしやうばいとはいゝ
ながらきがるにてくちやいよくいつれの
ざしきにてもいちざのきやうにいり
はなをたか〳〵とざしきをつとめ
此男のくせとしてあつかんをすき
大酒するとめがすわりかふまんの
きさしありていかなるごてれつの
しよろまやぼてんわがみちへ
いふいんせずといふ事なし
あるときこゝろよきほど
よいてちや屋のやねへいでゝ
すゞみいれはそよ〳〵とふきくる

現代語訳
ここに太鼓持ちの伝介という者がいた。いったい商売とは言いながら、気軽で口が上手く、どこの座敷でも一座の興に入り、鼻を高々と座敷を務める。この男の癖として熱燗を好み、大酒すると目が据わり、高慢の気差しがあって、いかなるでたらめの素浪人や暴れん坊でも、我が道へ言い逆らうということはない。
ある時、心地よい程度に酔って茶屋の屋根へ出て涼んでいると、そよそよと吹いてくる風がとても生臭い。小田原町か新場の匂いかと初めのうちは思ったが、それより先は何となくうつらうつらと空を眺めている。
英語訳
Here there was a man called Densuke who was a taikomochi (professional entertainer). Although it was indeed his trade, he was easy-going and eloquent, and at any banquet hall he would enliven the gathering, holding his nose high as he performed his duties at the party. This man had the habit of liking hot sake, and when he drank heavily his eyes would become fixed and he would show signs of arrogance - no matter what kind of masterless samurai or ruffian it was, none would dare contradict his way.
One time, when he was pleasantly drunk and had gone up onto the roof of a teahouse to cool off, the wind that came blowing softly was very fishy-smelling. At first he thought it might be the smell from Odawara-chō or Shinba, but after that he was somewhat drowsily gazing at the sky.
