一天塵一つもなく晴れ渡り、水浅黄色にはわずかに濃い丸に、極上等の空色墨流しのような雲が出ると、そのまま伝介をひっつかみ、雲ははるかに昇り、これはどうしたことかと思い顔を見れば、鼻が高く頭巾をかぶり、立付（たっつけ）を履いているのを見て、さすがは使いの者で何か山坊（やまぼう）とは思えども、あの女性かと思い、身動きもせず。初旅ではあるが、船賃や駕籠賃の世話もなく、酒手も言われず、二十里ばかり連れて行き、しばらく梢の上で休み、この時伝介は杉の木で尻を痛め、さすがは物事に慣れた男、両手をついてまだ「私はご挨拶も申しておりません。私のことはこの通り非礼をいたし、さぞお手がお疲れになりましたでしょう」と言えば、「いやいや、何のこれしき。そなたはまだ様子を知るまい。この方の親玉の気まぐれによって連れて行く。お主もこういう風流な長旅では旅もしたことがあるまい。箱根八里も馬もいらず、大井川の川止めの気遣いもなし。ずいぶんと心のままに見物しなさい」と見せながら行き、「聞いたばかりでは恐ろしいものだが、少しでも付き合って見れば、なかなか優しく味のあるものなり」

At this time Densuke hurt his bottom on a cedar tree, but being a man experienced in such matters, he put both hands down and said, "I have not yet offered my greetings. I have been so rude in this matter, your hands must surely be quite tired."
To this she replied, "Not at all, this is nothing. You probably don't yet understand the situation. I'm taking you along due to my boss's whim. You've probably never traveled on such an elegant long journey. You don't need horses even for the eight ri of Hakone, and there's no worry about being stopped at the Ōi River. Feel free to sightsee to your heart's content," she said as they continued on. "Just hearing about it makes it seem frightening, but if you spend even a little time with it, it's actually quite gentle and charming."
