十二三ねんと申さんにはとく〳〵かへり
もろともにみるめのちぎりもこればか
りこゝろのなみはたちかへりいでさせ
たまへば御なみだのひまより一しゆの
かたをあそばしける
かへるともかひはあらしなしらなみの
たちなんのちやきみを見るへき
とぞあそばしてさてふしたまへばみやも
又たちかへりて一しゆかくなん
けふこんとおもひていつるたひなれと
こひしかるへきみのおもかけ
とぞあそばしていでさせたまふさてきさき
たちはよろごひたまひてこゝにてんじやう
しゆうにあさかやまと申ものをめして
せんだいわうの大りへよに三どゑいじく
らせとてよみてをしへられける
あさかやまひかりすみよき玉のゐの
しはしかけをやとすひもしや
あさかやまはなにごとゝはしらずおほせなれ
ばうたをよみゑいじてかへりけりさて
現代語訳
「十二、三年と申すうちには、とく、とくお帰りになって、ともに契りを結んだ縁を続けましょう」と心の波は立ちかえり、お出かけになる際に、お涙の合間より一首の歌をお詠みになった。
「帰るとも甲斐はあらじな白波の
立ちなん後やきみを見るべき」
とお詠みになって、そして伏していらっしゃると、宮（善哉王）もまた引き返されて一首詠まれた。
「今日来ん（こん）と思いて出づる旅なれど
恋しかるべき身のおもかげ」
とお詠みになってお出かけになった。さて后たちは喜ばれて、ここで殿上衆の中に「あさかやま」と申す者を召して、先代王の御霊のもとへ世に三度詠み詠ませよとて、歌を詠んで教えられた。
「浅香山（あさかやま）光澄みよき玉の井の
しばし影をや宿す引もしや」
あさかやまは何ごとかとは知らず、仰せのままに歌を詠んで、詠じて帰った。さて――

"Within twelve or thirteen years, please return quickly, quickly, so that we may continue the bond of our vows together." With a heart like crashing waves, as he prepared to depart, through her tears, she composed a poem:
"Even if you return, what use will it be?
Like the white waves that have risen and gone—
after they have passed, shall I ever see you again?"
Having composed this, she lay prostrate, and the Prince (Zenzaiō) also turned back and composed one poem in reply:
"Though I set out on this journey thinking I shall return today,
your image remains, one that I shall surely long for."
Having composed this, he departed. Now the ladies of the court rejoiced, and here they summoned a man among the imperial courtiers called "Asakayama," and had him compose and chant a poem three times in this world before the spirit of the former king, teaching it to him:
"At Asakayama, in the jeweled well where the light shines clear,
shall I briefly lodge a reflection—perhaps drawing it forth?"
Asakayama, not knowing what it was all about, composed the poem as commanded, chanted it, and returned. And then—
