さへかたはらにかきしるし 古歌名跡考
と名つけうたよむ人の手つきとしも
なしたるは山田のくろにはふまめの

松かねの遠きむかしに名所といひ
たるもしらま弓 いまの 世には 雲にほふ
暁のさたかならすしてうませこしに
むきはむ うまの うまくしられかたく
たれも〳〵くらふの山ち やみにこゆらむ

うみゆく舟の 追風のたより よきこの

現代語訳
皇神の道に心を寄せ、これらの古い書物をも読み渡すついでに、歌文道の記録などから四百余首の歌を抜き出して、玉笹の露のように輝く美しい珍しい考察説をも傍らに書き記し、『古歌名跡考』と名付けて、歌を詠む人の手引きとしても作成したのは、山田の畔に這う豆のように真面目な仕事であったのだ。そもそも松風の響く遠い昔に名所と言われたものも、白真弓のように、今の世には雲に映える暁のように定かでなくて、生まれ育った土地に向かう馬の行き先がうまく知られ難く、誰もが暗い山道を闇の中で越えるようなありさまに思い当たるのを、大海を行く船に追い風の便りが良いように、この書がこのように完成したことの嬉しさがあまりに大きくて、差し出の磯のように差し出た、余りある言葉を書き記すのである。

Dedicating his heart to the way of the imperial gods, while reading through these ancient books, he extracted over four hundred poems from records of poetry and literature, and wrote alongside them rare and beautiful scholarly explanations that shine like dew on bamboo grass. He named this work "Kokaō Meiseki-kō" (Study of Ancient Poems and Famous Sites) and created it as a guide for those who compose poetry - this was earnest work, like beans crawling along the ridges of rice fields. Originally, places called famous sites in the distant past when pine winds echoed, like white birch bows, are now unclear in this world, like dawn clouds reflecting in the sky, and the destinations of horses heading toward one's birthplace are difficult to know well, so that everyone seems to cross dark mountain paths in darkness. Like a favorable tailwind for ships crossing the great sea, the joy of this book being completed in this way is so great that I write down these overflowing words, protruding like the jutting rocks of Sashide-no-iso.
