一、色欲を慎むべき事
一、保養を破るべからざる事
心持ち・身のあつかい・食べ物の選び方、酒食の慎み、風邪をひかないよう、冷えが入らないようにする用心などをいう。なお、詳しくは後述する。
以上を四禁とする。古来より、当地の湯に入って「あてられ」、あるいは命を落とす人が多いのは、この四禁に背いたからである。まことに恐るべきことである。それゆえ、湯治に行こうとする人は、まずこの書をよく読んで、四禁の道理をしっかりと心得た上で、出発すべきものである。
○ 地形の大意
温泉のある場所を「湯島」といい、但馬国城崎郡にある。道は三筋ある。
播磨越え （大坂より湯島まで五十一里半八丁余）
三田越え （大坂より湯島まで三十九里六丁余）
福知山越え （京より湯島まで三十五里半十四丁余）
右のいずれの道も、豊岡という所に到着し、豊岡から三里、川舟で下る。

This refers to maintaining a proper mindset, caring for one's body, choosing appropriate foods, being moderate in drinking and eating, taking care not to catch cold, and being cautious about letting the body grow chilled. Further details are provided below.
The above constitute the Four Prohibitions. The reason so many people throughout the ages have suffered ill effects from the waters of this spa — or even lost their lives — is because they violated these Four Prohibitions. This is truly something to be feared. Therefore, those who intend to travel to the hot spring for a curative stay should first read this book carefully, thoroughly understand the reasoning behind the Four Prohibitions, and only then set out on their journey.
○ General Description of the Geography
The place where the hot springs are located is called "Yushima," and it lies within Kinosaki District of Tajima Province. There are three routes to reach it:
Via Harima (From Osaka to Yushima: approximately 51.5 ri and 8 chō)
Via Sanda (From Osaka to Yushima: approximately 39 ri and 6 chō)
Via Fukuchiyama (From Kyoto to Yushima: approximately 35.5 ri and 14 chō)
All of the above routes lead to a place called Toyooka, from which one travels three ri downstream by river boat.
