(Continued from previous page, regarding Saikōji Temple)
The temple has since been converted to the Tendai sect. The principal image enshrined is a painted image of Amida Nyorai (Amitābha Tathāgata) in the hand of the Venerable Shinran himself. Kiyoshige, the founder of this temple, was a warrior who served through successive generations of the Kamakura period. In the fifth year of Bunji (1189), following the subjugation of Yasuhira of Ōshū, he was appointed to the post of bugyō (administrative officer) of that region in the ninth month of the same year. He also served as a mounted warrior (zuihyō) when Lord Sanetomo paid his respects at Tsurugaoka Hachimangū Shrine. His family lived in this area for generations. When the Venerable Shinran traveled through the eastern provinces spreading the teachings, he came to this area and lodged at Kiyoshige's residence. At that time, Kiyoshige took faith in the Venerable's teachings, became his disciple, and took the religious name Saikōbō. He also converted his residence into a temple, immediately naming it Saikōin. On the side altar next to the principal image is enshrined a wooden statue of Prince Shōtoku, carved by Kiyoshige himself.
[Note] According to the Azuma Kagami, on the tenth day of the eleventh month of the fourth year of Jishō (1180), following the victorious return from the subjugation of Satake Tarō Yoshimasa and Kansha Hideyoshi of Hitachi Province, it is recorded that the Manor of Maruko in Musashi Province was granted to Kasai Saburō Kiyoshige, and that an overnight stay was made at his residence. Kiyoshige had his wife prepare the meal, but without disclosing the true nature of the visit, had a woman brought from elsewhere for the purposes of hospitality—or so it was reported. This too must be an event that took place in this area.
**Kiyoshige Inari Shrine** Located in a field to the west of Saikōji Temple. It stands amid an ancient grove of thickly growing pine and cedar trees. This place is said to be the burial site of Kasai Saburō Kiyoshige, and an Inari deity has been enshrined here. [Note] In a flood in former years, this burial mound collapsed and a stone chest emerged from the earth. When the local people opened the lid, they found Sanskrit characters, lotus flower designs, and the name "Kiyoshige" carved on the inside of the lid. At that time, a wooden statue of Amida Nyorai measuring over three shaku and five sun in height emerged from within the chest. Inside its chest cavity was an iron Buddha—a seated figure of approximately one sun and eight bu in height. This is now kept at Saikōji Temple. Various military implements are also said to have emerged from the chest.
**Historical Site of the Residence of Aoto Saemon-no-jō Fujitsuna** Located in Aoto Village. [Note] The local people say that the place was formerly written "Aoto" (青砥, meaning "blue whetstone"), but was later changed to "Aoto" (青戸). In the second year of Eiroku (1559), the landholding register of the Hōjō clan of Odawara records the place name "Kasai Aoto" (葛西青戸) as part of the holdings of Tōyama Tanba-no-kami. Today the area has been divided into two villages, called Nishi-Aoto (West Aoto) and Omote-Aoto (Front Aoto). The local people call it a castle site or the site of a palace. Even now, a plot of land measuring about five to six bu in each direction remains as exempt land (jochi), and within a stand of old towering cedar trees there is a small shrine. Among the farmers of this village there are those who go by names such as "So-and-so of the Kuruwa (enclosure)" or "So-and-so of the Jin'ya (camp)," and it is said these names have been passed down from that era.
[Note] According to such writings as the Hōjō Kudaiki and the Taiheiki, Aoto Saemon was a descendant of Ōba Jūrō Chikasato, a resident of Izu Province. Since Chikasato had distinguished himself in great military service at the Battle of Uji during the Jōkyū Disturbance (1221), he was awarded the Aoto Manor in Kazusa Province as a reward, which was passed down through successive generations to Fujimitsu. Fujitsuna is said to have been born as the youngest child to a concubine of Fujimitsu. If this is so, the Aoto Manor would be located in Kazusa Province; however, according to a work called the Bōsō Shiryō by a man named Nakamura Kunika of Usui Township in Isumi District of Kazusa Province, while the Aoto Manor of Kazusa Province is mentioned in the Azuma Kagami, its location has not yet been ascertained, and the matter remains unclear. Although this place has long been called "Aoto" and places such as what is said to be Fujitsuna's residence site remain clearly visible, whether or not this is truly the place is unknown; we have thus recorded it here in accordance with oral tradition for the time being.
**Ancient-Style Wasabi Grater** [Note] This is preserved by a farmer of this area called Moemon. It is not particularly a thing to be admired, but it suffices to evoke the simple and honest customs of ancient times. Therefore, its illustration is presented here (below).
