つれ〴〵なるまゝにひぐらしふづくへ【文机。徒然草原文では机】にむかひ。すりこぎに
はねのはへたる【注】。鳥羽僧正（とばさうじやう）のえまきもの。みこしにうとう【見越し入道】の
しまのぬのこ【縞の布子】きたるあかぼんのたはれゑなどそこはかと
なくくりひろげみれば。こゝろにうつりゆくものみな
ばけものにあらざることなし。やくはん【やくわん＝やかん】はてんぐにて。
かべのしぶきはゆうれいとうたがふ。しかはあれど。
あやしきをみて
あやしまざれば
あやしき事なし。

【注 江戸期に流行した鳥羽絵の画題の一つ。あり得ない、馬鹿馬鹿しいことのたとえ。鳥羽絵の名は、国宝「鳥獣戯画」の作者と伝わる鳥羽僧正にちなむが、戯画という以外に直接の関係はない】
現代語訳
つれづれなるままに、日暮らし文机に向かい、すりこぎに羽の生えた鳥羽僧正の絵巻物、見越し入道の縞の布子を着た赤本のたわいもない絵などを、なんとなくくり広げて見れば、心に映りゆくものはみな化け物でないことはない。薬缶は天狗にて、壁の染みは幽霊と疑う。しかしながら、「怪しきを見て怪しまざれば怪しき事なし」という古いことわざを思えば、見る我が心の迷いである。ただ人の心の妖怪ほど恐ろしいものはない。皆の子供たち、とにかく心の化け物を退治すべし。合点か。
千秋万歳
京伝店、皆々様のご贔屓厚く、日に増し繁盛いたし、ありがたく存じ奉り候。切れ紙、紙煙草の御鼻紙、袋絵、御煙管等、年端分けて珍しき新型出来申し候。御求め下さるべく候。

In my idleness, facing my writing desk in the twilight hours, when I casually unfold and view the picture scrolls of Toba Sōjō featuring mortars with wings, and the frivolous illustrations in red books showing the Mikoshine-nyūdō wearing striped cotton garments, everything that comes to mind appears to be nothing but monsters. The medicine kettle becomes a tengu, and stains on the wall I suspect to be ghosts. However, when I recall the old saying "If you see something strange but do not find it strange, then there is nothing strange about it," I realize it is merely the delusion of my own observing mind. There is nothing more frightening than the demons of the human heart. All you children, you must by all means vanquish the monsters in your hearts. Do you understand?
