【朱書き】御家老中留

一 元禄五年申年五月二十九日、御留守番組の内藤宗右衛門が当年二月に閉門を命じられていたところ、当月二十三日から持病の胸のつかえが発症し、縁者田辺次太夫がその件を多賀谷権太夫まで届け出たため、目付中へ相談して町医細井玄春に薬を服用させたが効果なく、今朝病死した旨を多賀谷権太夫が評定所へ出向いて各位へ届け出た。閉門を命じられた者のことなので、目付中が死骸を検分すべきであり、同道するよう権太夫へ申し付けた。御目付西尾伝兵衛・鈴木彦太夫へも宗右衛門の家へ出向いて死骸を検分するよう両人へ申し渡した。但し、即刻狛木工允宅へ多賀谷権太夫並びに御目付共が出向き、宗右衛門の病死に間違いない旨を届け出た。そうであれば勝手次第に取り計らってよい。宗右衛門は閉門して在宅していた者で、その上息子もいないので、早速屋敷も明け渡すべき旨、この件については今晩木工允宅で本多左兵衛・狛帯刀の寄合の席において権太夫へ木工允が申し渡した。もっとも屋敷奉行彦坂又兵衛へも屋敷を受け取るよう伝達すべき旨を西尾伝兵衛へ申し渡した。【ここまで朱書き】

本妙寺からも伺いが出た由を町奉行が申し聞かせたため御家老中へ申し達したところ、勝手次第に取り計らってよい旨、もっとも内密に取り扱うべき旨を申し聞かされたため、その件を町奉行へ申し達した。

一 寛保二年戌年七月七日、御奉行熊野覚右衛門【挿入】今度休息を命じられ息子虎之丞が家督を下され大御番へ入れられた。遠慮の内に覚右衛門が病死した件の記録がある。これについて明晩木町の本妙寺へ送り取り計らいたい。その際下女四人・駕籠舁き四人・提灯持ち一人・外に男一人を出したい旨を筆頭熊谷小兵衛を通じて願い出たところ、願いの通りに命じられた。もっとも十分内密に取り扱うよう命じられた由を通路堀平太夫が届け出た。

八百里の案ずるところでは、熊谷小兵衛は堀平太夫の筆頭であろう。熊野虎之丞は太田三弥の御番組へ入れられ、筆頭は真田源太左衛門である。

一 延享元年子年正月十四日、御普請奉行水野藤兵衛が遠慮中に病死した旨を通路蜷川平太夫が届け出たため、大谷助六方の指図の上、前例がないので取り扱う。御目付奈良権左衛門は検使ではないが、病死を見分するため出向き、詳細を平太夫へ様子を尋ねるよう命じられ、御徒目付を召し連れて出向き書付を提出した。もっとも御免がない内なので、死骸は木田通安寺の願い寺へ送り埋葬させるべきである。十五日夜に入り、平太夫が駕籠の者二人を召し連れて入門し、外に三人を待機させ、駕籠に四人・提灯持ち一人・手明き一人を召し連れ、平太夫が付き添って寺へ送った。前後届け出があり、組の者両人・頭取中が遠見を申し付け、取り計らい済んだ上で引き取った。もちろん葬式らしい体裁がないよう、また息子磯之丞・家内の者共は厳重に遠慮して在宅するよう権左衛門を通じて息子磯之丞へ命じた。詳細は御家老中御用留抜書の内にある《割書：但し二月二十日藤兵衛死後の遠慮を御免され、三月五日息子磯之丞へ拝知の内百石を下され大御番入り、これまで二百石》

一 享保十六年亥年十月十一日、御普請奉行堀新左衛門に御意に適わない件があり、御役を取り上げ閉門を命じた。十二月十一日、新左衛門が先頃から不調のため、病気並びに養生の様子を通路波々伯部源之丞へ尋ね、覚書を提出させ江戸表へも届け出た。
但し岡部玄伯の薬を用いているが、薬のみで玄伯の見廻りはしていないため、玄伯へは尋ねていない。

一 延享三年寅年正月十五日、松原式膳が先年から松原彦次郎方に蟄居中自殺。検使土屋甚五左衛門。
陪臣通路の事は後の通路の部を見合わせるべし。

一 同五年辰年正月元日、坂部多三右衛門の伺い。遠慮の内、稲葉采女が申し聞かせたことには、多三右衛門の孫安之助が不調のため療治として町医藤沢貞隆・針医盲人竹沢寿悦を招きたい旨を家頼坂部久左衛門が私まで願い出た。この件を伝達してくれるよう申し聞かされ、よって御家老中へ届け出たところ、病気の件なので勝手次第にするよう本多民部方が申し聞かされ、その件を采女へ伝達した。同日久左衛門が申し聞かせたことには、願いの通りに申し出られたため両医を派遣したところ、両医も同様に届け出た。

一 天保十二年丑年四月十六日、波々伯部八左衛門に閉門を命じた。妾のてるという者が良くない趣が聞こえるため、暇を出すよう命じた。しかし三歳ほどの幼児がおり病気のため、てると一緒に養生のため出すことにしたい旨、その通りに命じた。
但し

一 弘化二年巳年九月二十九日、野村次郎太郎の養母に御城下立ち退きを命じ、次郎太郎に閉門を命じた。しかし次郎太郎方で召し使っていた下女が先達てから病気のため宿へ下げていた件を、御咎を命じた際に親類から届け出ていた。この下女が回復したため呼び寄せて再び召し使いたい旨を親類から口上書で御目付まで願い出、聞き置いて玄関番を遣わし、入りの件を見届け、追って御家老中へ話をした。

一 同四年未年八月十六日、岸理喜太郎に遠慮を命じたところ、下女が病気のため宿へ下げたい旨を同二十三日に口上書で筆頭が御勘定所御寄合日に持参したが、下女の病気で下げることについては筆頭・番頭等から御家老中へ願い出る必要はなく、御目付月番へ届け出れば承知し、玄関番を遣わして出入りを見届け、追って御家老中へ話をすればよいことなので、その通りに取り計らった。

一 天保二年卯年五月二十五日、末松門次郎に遠慮を命じ、小算末松半助が通路をしていたところ、翌二十六日門次郎の妹を木田中町専照寺塔頭教覚寺の妻女として送ったところ、今月臨月で里方故引き取っていたところ、近頃病気で在宅し、昨日寺へ送るべきところ手遅れとなり、今日送りたい旨を口上書で願い出たため、御奉行今立五郎太夫が狛木工方へ届け出たところ、承知した旨を五郎太夫並びに半助が届け出、先例の通り出掛けを見届けるため組の者一人を派遣した。

One: On the 29th day of the 5th month of Genroku 5, Year of the Monkey, Naitō Munemon of the castle guard unit, who had been ordered into house confinement in the 2nd month of this year, developed his chronic chest congestion from the 23rd of this month. His relative Tanabe Jidayū reported this to Tagaya Gondayū, who consulted with the inspectors and had town physician Hosoi Genshun administer medicine, but it was ineffective and he died this morning. Tagaya Gondayū went to the Council Chamber to report this to all officials. Since this concerned someone under house confinement, the inspectors should examine the corpse, and Gondayū was ordered to accompany them. Inspectors Nishio Den'bei and Suzuki Hikodayū were also ordered to go to Munemon's house to examine the corpse. However, Tagaya Gondayū and the inspectors immediately went to Koma Mokuzaemon's residence and reported that Munemon's death by illness was certain. In that case, they could handle it at their discretion. Since Munemon was under house confinement and had no son, the residence should be vacated immediately. This matter was conveyed by Mokuzaemon to Gondayū at tonight's meeting with Honda Sahei and Koma Tatewaki at Mokuzaemon's residence. The Town Magistrate reported that an inquiry had also come from Honmyō-ji temple, so this was reported to the Senior Councilors, who said it could be handled at their discretion, but should be dealt with discreetly. This was then communicated to the Town Magistrate.

One: On the 7th day of the 7th month of Kanpō 2, Year of the Dog, Magistrate Kumano Kakuemon [insertion] was ordered into retirement and his son Toranosuke was granted succession of the household and entered the Great Guard. There is a record that Kakuemon died of illness during house restraint. Regarding this, they wished to send him to Honmyō-ji temple in Kimachi tomorrow evening. For this occasion, they requested to provide four maidservants, four palanquin bearers, one lantern carrier, and one additional man through chief retainer Kumagai Kohei. This was granted as petitioned, with orders to handle it very discreetly, as reported by liaison Hori Heitayū.

According to Happyakuri's assessment, Kumagai Kohei was probably Hori Heitayū's chief retainer. Kumano Toranosuke was placed in Ōta Sanmi's guard unit, with chief retainer Sanada Gentazaemon.

One: On the 14th day of the 1st month of Enkyō 1, Year of the Rat, Construction Magistrate Mizuno Tōbei died of illness during house restraint, as reported by liaison Ninagawa Heitayū. Under direction from Ōtani Sukeroku's office, since there was no precedent, this was handled with Inspector Nara Gonzaemon not serving as official examiner, but going to inspect the death, and ordered to inquire details from Heitayū, taking foot inspectors and submitting a written report. Since there was no pardon, the corpse should be sent to Kida-dōri Anzan-ji, the family temple, for burial. On the evening of the 15th, Heitayū entered the gate with two palanquin men, left three waiting outside, and sent him to the temple accompanied by four for the palanquin, one lantern bearer, one attendant, with Heitayū escorting. There were reports before and after, with two group members and senior retainers ordered to observe from a distance, withdrawing after completion. Of course, there should be no funeral ceremony appearance, and son Isonosuke and household members were strictly ordered through Gonzaemon to maintain house restraint. One: On the 11th day of the 10th month of Kyōhō 16, Year of the Boar, Construction Magistrate Hori Shinzaemon had matters displeasing to his lordship, his position was revoked and he was ordered into house confinement. On the 11th day of the 12th month, since Shinzaemon had been unwell recently, inquiries about his illness and convalescence were made to liaison Hababe Gen'nosuke, who submitted a memorandum, which was also reported to Edo.
However: Although he used medicine from Okabe Genhaku, since Genhaku only provided medicine without making house calls, Genhaku was not consulted.

One: On the 1st day of the 1st month of the same 5th year, Year of the Dragon, inquiry regarding Sakabe Tasaemon. During house restraint, Inaba Uneme reported that Tasaemon's grandson Yasunosuke was unwell and they wished to summon town physician Fujisawa Sadataka and acupuncturist blind man Takezawa Juetsu for treatment. House administrator Sakabe Kyūzaemon petitioned this to me, and I was asked to convey this matter. Therefore, when reported to the Senior Councilors, since this concerned illness, they could proceed at their discretion, as communicated through Honda Minbu's office, and this was conveyed to Uneme. On the same day, Kyūzaemon reported that since it was granted as petitioned, both physicians were dispatched, and both physicians similarly reported.

One: On the 16th day of the 4th month of Tenpō 12, Year of the Ox, Hababe Hachizaemon was ordered into house confinement. Since unfavorable reports were heard about his concubine named Teru, he was ordered to dismiss her. However, since there was a three-year-old child who was ill, they wished to send out Teru together for convalescence, which was granted as requested.
However:

One: On the 29th day of the 9th month of Kōka 2, Year of the Snake, Nomura Jirōtarō's adoptive mother was ordered to leave the castle town and Jirōtarō was ordered into house confinement. However, a maidservant employed at Jirōtarō's residence had been sent to her lodgings due to illness, which relatives had reported when the punishment was imposed. Since this maidservant had recovered, relatives petitioned through a written statement to the inspectors to recall and re-employ her. This was acknowledged, a gatekeeper was dispatched to confirm her entry, and the matter was later reported to the Senior Councilors.

One: On the 16th day of the 8th month of Kōka 4, Year of the Sheep, Kishi Rikitarō was ordered into house restraint. When his maidservant became ill and they wished to send her to her lodgings, on the 23rd a chief retainer brought a written statement to the Accounting Office meeting day. However, since sending a maidservant away due to illness did not require petitioning from chief retainers or group leaders to the Senior Councilors, it could simply be reported to the monthly duty inspector, who would acknowledge it, dispatch a gatekeeper to confirm her departure, and later report to the Senior Councilors. This was handled accordingly.

One: On the 25th day of the 5th month of Tenpō 2, Year of the Rabbit, Suematsu Monjirō was ordered into house restraint, with Minor Accountant Suematsu Hansuke serving as liaison. The following day, the 26th, Monjirō's sister had been sent as wife to Kyōkaku-ji, a sub-temple of Senshō-ji in Kida-nakamachi, but since she was in her final month of pregnancy, she had been taken to her family home. She had recently become ill, and although she should have been sent to the temple yesterday, this was delayed, so they petitioned through a written statement to send her today. Magistrate Imadate Gorōdayū reported this to Koma Mokuzaemon's office, who acknowledged it. Gorōdayū and Hansuke reported this, and following precedent, one group member was dispatched to confirm her departure.
