現代語訳
昔々のことである。江戸の日本橋のあたりに竹八という者がいた。母親一人はいるが、商売で諸国へ飛脚として歩き回っている。先々での当世風な生活に慣れているとはいえ、母を心配して時々江戸へ帰ってくる。
今度もまた西国の方へ用事があって、長崎まで回る予定である。とはいえ女中の江島くらいとも思わず隣となり、歩くといっても片道は四百里ほど、往復では八百里にて、口にするのもはばかられるほどの旅である。けれども丈夫の薬も持たず、暇乞いをして出て行く。

Long, long ago, there was a man named Takehachi who lived near Nihonbashi in Edo. Though he had only his mother, he worked as a courier traveling to various provinces on business. Although he was accustomed to the fashionable lifestyle of his travels, he would return to Edo from time to time out of concern for his mother.
This time too, he had business in the western provinces and planned to travel as far as Nagasaki. Even so, without much thought for the maidservant Enoshima or his neighbor, he set out on foot. The one-way journey was about 400 ri, making it 800 ri round trip - a journey so arduous it was embarrassing to even mention. Yet he departed without taking any medicine for strength, having bid his farewells.
