〽かゝる闇夜（やみよ）の大門（おゝもん）をさしてにげ出（だ）す妻（つま）も子（こ）も客（きやく）についても身（み）の上（うへ）を
拭（かけ）ていだせば二階（にかい）の階子（はしご）たまり兼（かね）ては一（ひと）￣ト飛（とび）に馬爪（ばづめ）のかんざしたど〳〵と大門（おゝもん）
近（ちか）￣く逃（にげ）てくる鹿島（かしま）は鯰（なまづ）をおさへ玉ひ〽（ことば）ゆすぶればどふもいられぬ大地（おゝぢ）しん何（なん）と
なほ平（へひ）どうもいられぬ地しんではないか〽さやうでござり升（ます）此ぢしんを肴（さかな）にひとつ
もふけたらようござりませうとはなしのしたに女郎（じよろう）たち門（もん）の外（そと）もに

新吉原こわい関の戸
このような暗い夜の大門を目指して逃げ出す妻も子も、客についても身の上を案じて、拭いて出せば二階の階段、溜まりかねては一気に飛び降りて、馬の爪のかんざしをたどたどしく付けて大門近くまで逃げてくる。鹿島（の神）は鯰を押さえてくださる。「揺すぶればどうにもいられない大地震、何ということだ。まだ平静でいられない。地震ではないか。」「そうでございます。この地震を肴にひとつもうけたらよろしいでしょう」と話している下で、遊女たちが門の外に立って休んでいる。「この大門をどうぞ通してください。」「あれ、大門に大変なことがあるぞ。」「何、大変とは何事だ。」「ははあ、そなたは遊女衆だな。この大地震に若い衆も禿も連れずに、ただ一人でこの大門へは何をしに来たのだ。」「ああ、私は仮住まいへ立ち退く者です。門を通してください。」「なるほど、通してもやろうが、お守りはあるか。」「それどころではありません。」「お守りがなければ危険だ。」「この大地震にさぞ難儀であろう。駕籠にでも載せて逃がしてやろうか。」「なるほど、通り筋なら通してもやろうが、そんなら俺が揺すぶることがあるが、その度に一々転ぶか。」「ああ、道中でも転ぶでしょう。」「第一、驚くなよ。さあ江戸中へ大変な地震騒動に火事にも焼ける。その中に焼け跡の灰まみれの鬼にして逃げる姿もいとおしいと、廓の外へ押し出してこちらへこちらへと逃がしたのであった。

In such a dark night, wives, children, and even customers flee toward the great gate, worrying about their fate. Wiping themselves as they emerge, they cannot bear to stay on the second floor stairs and leap down in one bound, wearing horse-claw hairpins precariously as they flee near the great gate. The deity of Kashima holds down the catfish. "When it shakes, we cannot bear this great earthquake. What a terrible thing! We still cannot remain calm. Isn't this an earthquake?" "Yes, it is. We should profit from this earthquake as our dish," they talk below while the courtesans stand resting outside the gate. "Please let us through this great gate." "Look, there's trouble at the great gate!" "What? What do you mean by trouble?" "Ah, you are courtesans. In this great earthquake, without bringing young attendants or child apprentices, what did you come alone to this great gate for?" "Ah, I am one who must evacuate to temporary housing.
