思っていてもなお飽き足りなかった夕顔の露に遅れてしまった気持ちを、年月が経っても忘れずにいらっしゃる。あちこちで打ち解けない垣根の厳しい奥深い心の女性の煩わしさに比べて、身近で親しみやすかった、あの情趣に似るものはなく、恋しく思われなさる。どうにかして大仰な様子はなく、とても可愛らしいであろう人で、慎み深いところもない人を見つけたいものだと、絶えず思い続けていらっしゃるので、少し由緒があって聞こえてくる辺りには御耳をお止めになる。

Even though he had been thinking of her, he could never forget the feeling of being left behind by the evening glory's dew that he could never get enough of, even as the years and months passed. Compared to the troublesome nature of women with deep, reserved hearts who maintain strict barriers everywhere and never let their guard down, there was nothing comparable to that tender intimacy that had been so close and dear to him, and he found himself longing for it. He constantly thought that somehow he would like to find a person who would have no pretentious airs, who would be truly lovely, and who would have no excessive modesty. So whenever he heard of any place with some distinguished lineage, he would lend his ear to it.
