一草木之事 白萱多く生茂り外に草類有之
候へとも聢と覚不申大木は無之茱茰之様成
木有之右之外樹木見懸不申候由
一鳥獣之事国元に而藤九郎と唱大さ鴻程有之
羽毛は白黒交り水鳥にて魚を取右鳥多居申候
漂流之比は卵をかへし候にて参り候ても逃
不申故壱度に拾羽位も取得右之鳥を石に打付

一、草木のこと 白萱が多く生い茂り、他に草類がありましたが、はっきりと覚えておりません。大木はなく、茱萸のような木がありました。それ以外に樹木は見かけませんでした。
一、鳥獣のこと 国元で藤九郎と呼ぶ、大きさが鴻ほどもある鳥がおり、羽毛は白黒が混じった水鳥で、魚を取ります。その鳥が多くおりました。漂流した頃は卵をかえす時期で、近づいても逃げないため、一度に十羽位も捕まえることができました。その鳥を石で打ち付けて肉を取り、生のまま食用にしておりました。やがて人を恐れて逃げ去り、その後その鳥の雛も育つにつれて巣立ちしていってしまったため、磯貝のみを取って食用にしました。その他、鷺や鳫も見かけました。獣類は一切見かけませんでした。

Vegetation: White pampas grass grew abundantly, and there were other grasses, though I do not remember them clearly. There were no large trees, but there were trees resembling cornelian cherry. We saw no other trees besides these.
Birds and beasts: There were birds we call "Fujikurō" in our home province, about the size of swans, with black and white mixed plumage. They were waterfowl that caught fish, and many of them lived there. At the time of our drift ashore, it was their egg-hatching season, and they would not flee even when we approached, so we could catch about ten birds at once. We would strike these birds against stones to obtain the meat and eat it raw. Eventually they learned to fear humans and fled. After that, as the chicks of these birds grew and left their nests, we had only shore shellfish to eat. We also saw herons and thrushes. We saw no land animals whatsoever.
Seasons: Around New Year it was extremely cold, and it gradually became warm from late March into April. The seasons were no different from our home province, with thunder and earthquakes occurring. During the castaways' stay on the island, no snow fell.

People: The height of men and women was normal, and their complexion and the appearance of their eyes did not differ particularly from Japanese people. Men had cropped hair and shaved their beards, plucking them like a tea stand. They wore hats and combed the hair at the front to the left and right with combs.
