新吉原は五町すべてに潰れた家が多く、場所によっては一時に出火して、遊女はもちろん、客人なども多く死亡した。その中で、毎晩ここに来ていた按摩たちは、その人数も多かったにもかかわらず、ただ二人しか死ななかったという。盲人でありながら、よくも逃げ出せたものである。

三浦屋・吉（▢）衛門などは、とりわけ潰れが甚だしく、抱えている遊女なども半数以上が焼け死んだ。中でも三浦屋の家では、歩ける遊女を選んで穴蔵（地下の蔵）へ入れて助けようとしたが、火が入ってしまい、みな焼け死んだという。
廓内の焼死者についてお調べになったところ、その数は六百三十余人に上った。土蔵は一か所、地震で崩れたままで焼け残っただけで、家屋については京町一丁目の下の方に二、三軒残り、大門外の五十間道の西側の家が残った。その他はほとんど何も残らず焼け亡んでしまったことは、実にあわれに思われるのであった。
ここで「危うい命を助けられる人などいるはずもない」などと言われていたが、誰も彼もみな逃げ出して、また仮の宿の店を開き、いずれも賑わっていた。その家々を見ると、姿海老屋・松葉屋の両家の姿は見えなかった。

In the five districts of Shin-Yoshiwara, a great many houses collapsed, and in some places fires broke out simultaneously. Not only courtesans but also many visitors lost their lives. Among those present were the blind masseurs who came to the quarter every night — and although their numbers were considerable, it is said that only two of them perished. Remarkable indeed that they, being blind, managed to escape.
Among the brothels, Okamoto-rō in Kyōmachi Icchōme, Matsubaya in Kyōmachi Nichōme, Wakasaya in Kadochō, and Okada and Iseja in Edomachi Nichōme —

— as well as Miuraya and Yoshi▢emon, suffered especially catastrophic destruction, and more than half of the courtesans in their employ burned to death. At Miuraya in particular, the proprietors selected courtesans who were able to walk and sheltered them in the underground storage cellar, intending to save them — but fire entered the cellar, and all of them burned to death, it is said.
An official investigation into the deaths by fire within the quarter put the toll at over 630 people. Only one earthen storehouse survived — having collapsed in the earthquake and then escaped the flames in its ruined state. Of the houses themselves, only two or three remained in the lower part of Kyōmachi Icchōme, and the houses on the western side of the Gojikken-dori road outside the Great Gate also survived. Everything else burned away without a trace — a sight that was truly pitiful to behold.
People said that there could be no survivors from such a catastrophe, yet one after another, they all managed to escape, and temporary shops were soon opened, each doing a lively trade. Looking over these establishments, however, the two houses of Sugata Ebiya and Matsubaya were nowhere to be seen.
