ここにまた、地震の後、いまだ市中が落ち着かないうちに、諸方からさまざまな一枚刷りの錦絵や小冊子などが、およそ三百二十余種に及んで出回った。絵草紙屋や、あるいは辻々で売り歩く者があった。皆、人々が競ってこれを求めた。しばらくして、幕府より御制禁の品となったため、残らず絶版とさせた。しかしながら、大江戸は広大で繁栄しているので、絶版となった後もまた残っているものがさまざまあった。そのうちの一つ二つを、ゆかりに因んで末尾に記すのは、後の世に伝えて、雨の日のなぐさみに添えるためである。

気持ちばかりではございますが、力強く口上を申し上げます。
そもそも、この「妙ゆり出しくずれ」の件は、先年信州にて揺り広めましたところ、大揺れ・大難渋いたしましたため、決して他国へせり揺り・押し揺り、一切致さないことにしておりましたところ、近年諸国に紛らわしい偽物のくずれが見受けられます。とりわけ京・大坂・東海道筋を押し揺りいたし、また江戸表にまで偽物のくずれを押し揺りいたし、その上、火事祈祷を上げ、ごく乱暴な振る舞いにつき、急いで揺り止めを申し付け、私の方は一方的に揺りとしました。もっとも、うんとはお揺り申さず、当十月限りに揺り子へ申し渡しましたので、逃げ出したり野宿したりするようなお騒ぎなく、ご安心なさって、楽々とご夫婦仲良く、夜中のゆり出しはご自身で毎夜二、三服ずつお用いになれば、ご子孫繁盛いたし、ぐうたらなお子様はいらっしゃいませんので、しっかりお抱きつきなさって、「ああ、もういっそう良い世の中だ」とご評判くださいますよう、お求めのほど、お願い申し上げます。

Here again, while the city had not yet settled down after the earthquake, various single-sheet nishiki-e prints and small pamphlets began circulating from all directions, amounting to over three hundred and twenty different kinds in total. They were sold at illustrated-book shops and by peddlers at crossroads throughout the city. Everyone eagerly competed to purchase them. Before long, the authorities banned them as prohibited items, and all were ordered out of print. Nevertheless, because great Edo is so vast and prosperous, even after the ban, many copies of various kinds remained. I record one or two of them here at the end, as mementos, to be passed down to later generations as a comfort on rainy days.

I humbly offer this advertisement with nothing but spirit and vigor:
Now then, regarding this "Marvelous Yuri-dashi Kuzure" — some years ago, when we tested its shaking in Shinshū province, the tremors were so great and caused such tremendous hardship that we firmly decided never to push-shake or squeeze-shake it into other provinces again. However, in recent years, various confusingly similar counterfeit "kuzure" (collapses) have been appearing throughout the country. Particularly along the routes of Kyoto, Osaka, and the Tōkaidō highway, push-shaking has been carried out, and again, counterfeit kuzure has been pushed all the way to Edo — and on top of that, fire-prayers have been performed, and the conduct has been outrageously rough. We have therefore urgently issued orders to stop the shaking, and on our end have conducted a one-sided shaking. We have not, however, shaken too much; as of this October, we have given notice to the "shaker-child" (earthquake agent), so there is no need for the alarm of fleeing or sleeping outdoors. Please rest assured, relax, and with your spouse in good harmony — if you use the night-time shaking yourself, two or three doses each night, your descendants shall prosper, and you shall have no idle, good-for-nothing children. Please hold on tight, declare "Ah, what a wonderful world this has become!", and we humbly ask for your patronage.
