**[Right Page]** Eight hundred storehouses, countless roof tiles — crashing and clattering, tumbling down like mountains in the evening, tumbling over and over again; wall plaster scattering like sesame husks, scattering again and again; bumps and hollows, bumps and hollows, triple bumps and hollows — "Aha! Got it! Take heed!" — into the rice paddies, into the thickets, people of high and low rank gathered alike: the brilliant flower of great Edo! When at last things grow quiet, as if not even a branch stirs, everyone's heart softens and calms; finally, from newborn babes and crawling infants on up, all hearts settle down. With merciful relief — "Bring out the buckets! Set out the bowls! Rattle the mortars! Crack-crack goes the abacus counting!" — Eitō, Eitō (lasting fortune!), drawing breath to the ends of the eastern world, all the cracked and broken things suddenly settle down; the world quietly rejoices at its renewal, buzzing with the celebratory song of *Manzairaku* — "Taking up the beams and ridge-poles, behold!" — and so on, reverently — will you not straighten out the bent timbers of your house? --- **Mikawa Manzai** (三河万歳 — a traditional comic New Year's performance) "So your regular patrons are satisfied, are they? Well, the house didn't collapse — that's quite all right, I suppose. Oh my, that's quite something — the pillars that smashed through the eaves of the tenement row, carrying a young child on one's back in a daze, pulling a young girl along by the hand — Oh my, shedding tears like precious jewels, spending the night outdoors in the cold, oh so hungry — vendors of sweet soup (*shiruko*) and noodles carrying their wares, all eating together in the great burned-out ruins — **[Left Page]** Every single pillar cracking with a splintering crash; the second-floor ladder making escape difficult; the three great theater towers suffering damage; those who didn't give even four mon this year are real misers; the five official relief huts are an act of benevolence; six wooden memorial sticks (*sotoba*) for the immediate dead; the pawnshops lending out bedding; hardship reduced to ash and cinders; ringing out in all eight directions, the rapid alarm bells; the nine-ringed pagoda finial (*kurin*) being bent — the very source of mysteries; the tremendous uproar was that the courtesans and their clients all cried 'Whoa!' and ran away — now that was a great financial loss! 'Hooray, Manzairaku!' 'Well then, from here on, children too, and the young apprentice girls (*shinzō*), softly then — whoosh! — running away; creaking and crashing, here they come!' 'Oh my, the master of the house is in light clothing, the mistress is in light clothing, and the bathhouse attendant in front of the hearth — well, he's stark naked! — grabs his crowbar and pickaxe, clattering along, poking about here and there, when from the corner of a small room the kitchen maid (*osandōn*) presents her enormous rear end and — goodness! — comes heaving and wriggling out on all fours!' 'Those who came bearing bowls of porridge as a get-well gift — well, they gulped down five or six bowls themselves and come wobbling along.' The catfish that caused all the commotion has been tied up and sent off to Kashima. From here on, nothing but good things will come — guests arrive one after another from morning till night without a break; from here and there, gold oval coins (*koban*) and smaller coins come pouring in — the pleasure quarter houses number a thousand, the gold amounts to ten thousand ryō — please accept it all with our compliments!"
