かりそめにいでにしあとをきてみれは
とらふすのへとなるそかなしき
さてうらしまたらうは一もとの
まつのこかげにたちよりてあきれは
てゝそゐたりける太郎おもふやうかめ
があたへしかたみのはこあひかまへて
あけさせ給ふなといひけれともいまはな
にかせんあけて見はやとおもひみるこ
そくやしかりけれ此はこをあけて
みれば中よりむらさきのくも三すぢ
のほりけりこれをみれば二十四五の
よはひもかはりはてゝあはれなり

仮初めに出でにし跡を来て見れば
とらぶすの辺となるぞ悲しき
さて浦島太郎は一本の松の木陰に立ち寄って呆れ果ててそこに座っていた。太郎が思うには「亀が与えし形見の箱、堅く『開けさせ給うな』と言いけれども、今は何かせん。開けて見ばや」と思い、見るこそ悔しかりけれ。この箱を開けて見れば、中より紫の雲三筋昇りけり。これを見れば二十四、五の齢も変わり果てて哀れなり。
英語訳
Carelessly having come out to see the place where I once lived,
How sad that it has become a desolate field
Then Urashima Tarō went to stand in the shade of a lone pine tree, and sat there in complete bewilderment. Tarō thought to himself, "The keepsake box that the turtle gave me—she firmly told me 'Do not open it,' but what does it matter now? I shall open it and see," and how regrettable it was that he looked. When he opened this box, three streams of purple cloud rose up from within. Upon seeing this, his age of twenty-four or twenty-five years changed completely, and it was pitiful to behold.
