化け物たちの交わり。信頼できる仲間同士の酒宴の席。人を見下ろすのは座頭の株を持つ者。猫又が三味線をかじれば、面白い狸が腹鼓を打つ。産女は百歳になっても踊りを忘れない。夜が更けるにつれてろくろ首の長話。幽霊がろうそくの立ち消えとなり、あくびの口は耳まで裂ける。油嘗めの禿が舌打ちして、行灯を吹き消せば真っ暗闇から引き出した丑三つ時頃の寂しさに、それっ出た、やれ出た。何が出た、大禁物の金平か。くわばらくわばら、許してくれ。十返舎一九序

The gathering of supernatural beings. A drinking party among trustworthy companions. Looking down upon people is one who holds the rank of blind musician master. When the cat-demon gnaws on the shamisen, an amusing tanuki beats its belly drum. The birth-spirit never forgets to dance even at a hundred years old. As the night deepens, the rokurokubi tells long tales. Ghosts become the flickering out of candles, and yawning mouths split to the ears. The oil-licking sprite clicks its tongue, and when it blows out the lantern, from the pitch darkness emerges the loneliness of the Hour of the Ox. "There it comes! Oh, it's out! What has appeared?
