四月朔日
前夜より祠官《二十一人》各々葵祭の神斉を始めるため、前日に陰陽大夫が御祓禊の忌竹を家屋の門内に樹立する《祢宜は門の左に樹立し、祝は門の右に樹立する。ただし祓禊は専ら外のことであるため、外からの左右とする》。今日より僧尼・軽服の穢れた人を禁じ、兵草遊乱の音声を止める。
その儀式として、陰陽大夫《烏帽子・大帷子・浄衣の下》は召具一人《袴を着用》を召し連れて祠官の邸宅に来る《尤も職次にこだわらず順路による》。御祓禊の具を調える。まず椙原五枚を左右四方に裁つ《ただし別に頭紙を用いず同じ紙で裁つ》。
小幣串五本を一尺二寸程に伐り、一本の棒に幣紙一枚ずつを挟む《ただし頭紙の所は一寸程前に出す》。これを藁束に立てる《藁束は紙で巻き、藁で括る》。青竹を忌串とする《長さ一丈八尺、四五寸の竹》。その下に五穀を埋める《その品目は稲・粟・稗・麦・豆であるが、今は多く略して摺糠を用いる。ただし競馬乗尻の家では五穀を用い、その式は少し異なる。詳細は競馬会の条下にある》。これは清祓の略儀である。三度土器二枚、その中に水を少し充て、併せて榊葉一二枚を切り入れる。忌串の下、摺糠の上に空伏(うつふせ)に置く。

First day of the fourth month
From the previous night, the shrine officials <<twenty-one people>> each begin the divine purification for the Aoi Festival, so on the previous day the Yin-Yang Master erects purification bamboo (imidake) within the gates of their residences <<the prayer master erects it to the left of the gate, the ritualist erects it to the right of the gate. However, since purification is exclusively an external matter, it follows the left and right as seen from outside>>. From today, monks, nuns, and people in mourning dress are prohibited, and the sounds of military games and revelry are stopped.
For this ceremony, the Yin-Yang Master <<wearing court cap, large court robe, and purification garments underneath>> brings along one attendant <<wearing hakama>> and comes to the shrine official's residence <<not necessarily following rank order, but according to the route>>. The implements for purification are prepared. First, five sheets of ceremonial paper (sugihara) are cut for the four directions <<however, no special header paper is used, cutting with the same paper>>.
Five small offering wands (heigushi) are cut to about one shaku two sun in length, with one sheet of offering paper inserted into each rod <<however, the header paper portion extends about one sun forward>>. These are erected in straw bundles <<the straw bundles are wrapped with paper and bound with straw>>. Green bamboo serves as purification stakes (imigushi) <<one jō eight shaku long, bamboo of four to five sun diameter>>. Five grains are buried beneath it <<the varieties are rice, millet, barnyard grass, wheat, and beans, but nowadays it is often simplified to use rice bran. However, households of horse racing participants use the five grains, and their method differs slightly. Details are in the section on horse racing ceremonies below>>. This is the abbreviated ceremony of purification. Two earthenware vessels are used three times, filled with a little water, and one or two sakaki leaves are cut and placed in them. They are placed face down (utsufuse) beneath the purification stakes, above the rice bran.
