題言
すべて商家（しやうか）通用（つうよう）の文章（ぶんしやう）は強（あなが）ち文法（ぶんはふ）にかゝはらず其程々（そのほど〳〵）よりは
少（すこ）しく敬（うやま）ひて事（こと）のよく行（ゆき）とゞくを専一（せんいち）とすしかれば耳（みゝ）なれぬ言（こと）
葉（ば）読（よみ）がたき文字（もんじ）は聊（いさゝか）も□□【遣う？】べからずさればとて無下（むげ）にいやしき言（こと）
葉（ば）されたる文字（もんじ）は殊更（ことさら）に用（もち）□へ□【「ふへか」ヵ】らず唯（たゞ）時（とき）の宜（よろしき）に随（したが）ひ余（あま）り長（なが）からぬ

題言
すべて商家で通用する文章は、必ずしも文法にこだわらず、その身分相応よりは少しく敬語を用いて、用件がよく相手に伝わることを第一とする。したがって聞き慣れない言葉や読みにくい文字は少しも使ってはならない。だからといって、あまりに卑しい言葉や俗な文字は特に用いてはならない。ただ時と場合に応じて、あまり長くないようにするのが望ましい。そうした理由から、この書を著したのは、ひとえにその趣旨を基本として、文言や文字の使い方に心を配り、広く用字を集めて選んだのである。これはわずかな冊子であるが、利益は広大である。実に商業で富を築く家の基本財産というべきものである。

Preface
All correspondence used in merchant houses should not necessarily adhere strictly to grammar, but should employ language slightly more respectful than one's station warrants, with the primary goal being that business matters are well communicated and reach their destination. Therefore, unfamiliar words or difficult-to-read characters should not be used at all. However, this does not mean that excessively vulgar words or crude characters should be particularly employed either. It is desirable to follow what is appropriate to the time and occasion, keeping the length reasonably short. For these reasons, this book was compiled entirely with this principle in mind, paying careful attention to wording and character usage, and widely collecting and selecting appropriate characters. Though this is but a small booklet, its benefits are vast. It can truly be called the fundamental asset of prosperous merchant families engaged in commerce.
