定めない 命つれなし
長らえば 夢にも君を
見るかとて 風の便りを
待つ門に 明け暮れ物を

思いつつ 今年も暮れて
暮れは鳥 危うき世をも
過ぎ行けば 岡の真葛の
恨み侘び 人に心を
沖つ風 身に染む夜の

知らせばや 過ぎ別れにし

Though I know it, why is it that meeting
is so rare that even visitors
to this reed hut where I sleep alone at night
do not appear even in dreams?
How I envy the Weaver Star
who waits for the night to meet her lover—
she can trust in when it will come, unlike me
whose bond is severed. People speak of pity
like a sash worn across the chest, but only until tomorrow
is this unreliable life assured.
If I live on, perhaps in dreams I might
see you, and so at my gate
I wait for word carried on the wind, spending my days and nights in longing

Lost in thought, this year too comes to an end.
As twilight birds pass through
this precarious world,
like the creeping vines on the hill
I lament and grieve, giving my heart to someone—
the offshore wind pierces my body on nights when
the birds cry, and my heart that yearns for you
remains so cold and distant. When I say "then so be it,"
I am forgotten, and this suffering
of my loving heart—
if only I could let you know of it!
The green robe, the crane-feather garment
from when we parted long ago
cannot dry the tears on my sleeves—
I cannot contain them, though only my heart
