恵比寿天申訳之記（ゑびすてんもふしわけのき）
我等諸神に留守居をあづかり罷居候ところ
あまりよきたいをつりしゆへ一 盃（ぱい）をすごし
たいすいニおよび候あいだをつけこみたちまち
かなめいしをはねかへし大江戸へまかりいで
蔵（くら）のこしまきをうちくづしはちまきを
はづし諸家（しよけ）をつぶし死亡（しほう）人すくなからず
出火（しゆつくわ）いたさせはなはだぼうじやくふじんの
しよぎやういたし候ゆへさつそくとりおさへ
ぎんみ仕候ところ一とうのなまづは身ぶるひして
大ニおそれ一言（いちごん）のこたへもなくこのときかしらだち
たるとみゆるものつゝしんで申スよふ
「おそれながら仰のおもむきかしこまり候也此たび大へんの
ことは一とふり御きゝ遊され下さるべし此義は申上ずとも御存の
義にしてはるなつあきふゆのうちにあついじふんにさむい日あり
さむいときにあたゝかなる日ありかくのごとくきこうのくるひ
有てかんだんの順なるとしは少く候今年最ふじゆんなから
ごゝくのよくみのり候は八百万神の御守り遊され候
御力による所也さて天地にかんだんの順のさだまり
ありてはるなつと其きのじかうことの外くるひ候ゆへ
わたくしともくにのすまひにては以の外おもしろき
じせつになりたりとわきまへなきものどもちん
しんのごとくくるひまはり候ゆへわたくしども
いろ〳〵せいとうをいたせどもみゝにもかけず
らんぼうにくるひさはぎ候よりつひに思ひよら
ざる日本へひゞき御しはいの内なる
ところをそんじ
候だんいかなる
つみにおこなわるともいはい
これなく候也され共わけて
御ねがひにはわたくしども
のこりなく御かりつくし候とも
そんじたるいへくらのたつにもあらねば
まつしばらくのいのちを御あづけ
下されこれより日本のとちをまもり
いかなるじかうちがひにてもこの
たびのごときことはもうとう仕らず
天下のたいへいごこくほうねんを
君が代をまもり奉り候べしと
一とうにねがひけるゆへわたくし
より御わび申上候ところさつそく
御きゝすみ下されまことに
もつてありがたく候
きやうこう十月のため

現代語訳
恵比寿天申し訳の記
私たち諸神に留守番を任されて控えているところ、あまりに良い鯛を釣ったので一杯を過ごし、大酔いに及んだ隙をつかれて、たちまち要石を跳ね返し大江戸へ出向き、蔵の腰巻を打ち崩し鉢巻を外し、多くの家を潰し死亡者も少なからず、出火もさせ、はなはだ暴虐不尽の所業をしたので、さっそく取り押さえ詳しく調べたところ、一匹の鯰は身震いして大いに恐れ、一言の返事もない。このとき頭立っていると見えるものが謹んで申すよう、
「恐れながら仰せの趣き、畏まって承りました。この度の大変なことは、ひとまずお聞き遊ばされてください。この件については申し上げずとも御存知のことで、春夏秋冬のうちに暑い時分に寒い日があり、寒いときに暖かな日があり、このように気候の狂いがあって、寒暖の順なる年は少ないのです。今年は最も不順でありながら、五穀がよく実ったのは八百万神の御守り遊ばされたご威力によるところです。さて天地に寒暖の順の定まりがあって、春夏とその季の時候が格外に狂ったので、私どもが国の住まいでは格外に面白い時節になったと、わきまえなき者どもが陳臣のごとく狂い回ったので、私どもがいろいろと制止をしても耳にもかけず、乱暴に狂い騒いだことから、ついに思いもよらない日本へ響き、御支配の内なるところを損じました。
いかなる罪に行われても言い訳はございません。されども特に御願いには、私どもを残らず御狩りつくされても、損じた家蔵の建つにもあらねば、まずしばらくの命を御預け下され、これより日本の土地を守り、いかなる時候違いでも、この度のごときことは申し上げません。天下の太平、護国豊年を、君が代を守り奉るべし」と
一同に願ったので、私からお詫び申し上げたところ、さっそくお聞き済み下され、まことにもってありがたいことです。

Record of Ebisu's Apology
While we gods were entrusted with watching over during the absence of others, we caught such fine sea bream that we indulged in drinking and became greatly intoxicated. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the catfish immediately overturned the keystone and went forth to Great Edo, destroying the foundation wrappings of storehouses, removing their headbands, crushing many houses, causing not a few deaths, and causing fires - committing extremely violent and unreasonable acts. Therefore, we immediately captured and interrogated them closely. The catfish trembled with fear and could not utter a single word in reply. At this time, what appeared to be their leader respectfully spoke:
"With all due respect, we humbly acknowledge your words. Please hear about this great disturbance. Though we need not explain what you already know, within the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, there are cold days during hot periods and warm days during cold times. With such climatic irregularities, years with proper seasonal order are few. Though this year was most irregular, the good harvest of five grains was due to the protective power of the myriad gods. Since heaven and earth have established seasonal order, but spring and summer have been extremely irregular, we thought it had become an extraordinarily interesting season in our country's dwelling. Ignorant beings went mad like retainers, and though we tried various means to restrain them, they paid no heed and rioted violently, ultimately causing unexpected reverberations in Japan and damaging places under your dominion.
Whatever punishment we may receive, we have no excuse. However, we especially petition that even if you hunt down all of us, since the damaged houses and storehouses cannot be rebuilt thereby, please spare our lives for now. From this point forward, we will protect Japan's land, and no matter what seasonal irregularities occur, we will never again cause such events as this time. We shall protect the realm's peace, the nation's prosperity, and abundant harvests, and guard your eternal reign."
Since they all made this petition, I offered my apologies on their behalf, and you graciously accepted them immediately, for which we are truly grateful.
