人も愛おしい
人も恨めしい
味気なく
世を思うゆえに
物思う
身は
九十九番
この心は王道を軽んじ、よこしまな世になっていくことを嘆き思し召すのである。「人も愛おしい、人も恨めしい」とは、世の中の人の心がさまざまであって治まりがたい心である。また、ただ一人の人についても、良いと思う人にも、また悪いところがある心である。
そこで良いところは愛おしく、悪いところは恨めしく、取り合わせて味気ないと詠み給うたのである。

Number Ninety-nine
This poem expresses His Majesty's lament and concern about the world becoming corrupt and the righteous way of governance being taken lightly. "People are dear to me, people are resentful to me" refers to the various hearts of people in this world that are difficult to govern. Even regarding just one person, there are bad aspects even in those we consider good.
Therefore, the good aspects are dear and the bad aspects are resentful, and combining these feelings, he composed this poem expressing the world as "tasteless and meaningless."
