Various rumors circulated saying such things could happen, but if sufficient water accumulates in the many landslide areas, it would likely break through and cause massive flooding at once. In any case, due to the Sai River, there are numerous disaster-stricken areas.
Item: We departed from that area around noon on the 26th, barely managing to pass through places where the ground had split. The retainer of Lord Hida no Kami also departed subsequently, but from the mountain side of Shiozaki Village, a great number of people gathered with loud voices, surrounding the retainer. Among them were those separated from parents and wives and children, crying and wailing "Help us!" and "Give us food!" Therefore, local deputy officials and clerks were called to gradually reason with them, explaining the arrangements for relief measures, and they were finally persuaded to withdraw. Due to these circumstances, rapid reconstruction work was extremely difficult to accomplish, and there were no lodgings available for immediate use. We ourselves had to sleep outdoors for two days and two nights before finally managing to leave. However, once the local lord provides temporary shelters and other relief measures and the people's spirits settle, we plan to report back immediately and return to begin reconstruction work.
Item: Regarding this great earthquake, people in that area say it affected a ten-ri radius, but the north-south width appears to be limited to about five to six ri, and the length to about twelve to thirteen ri. Beyond that, there probably wasn't anything particularly significant. When we departed Shiozaki Village, crossed the Chikuma River, and traveled about one ri to Yashiro post town in Matsushiro domain, there were apparently thirty collapsed houses and twelve to thirteen immediate deaths. The ground fissures from Shiozaki Village appeared to extend only slightly and lightly into the fields, and from there, traveling three ri further to the area around Sakaki post town under the jurisdiction of Deputy Kawakami Kingonosuke...
