Villages along the rivers in Minochi District were submerged, with several locations where new rapids formed. Although there are undoubtedly countless places where crops were covered with mud or washed away, it was difficult to assess the damage. After midnight, the water level finally seemed to stabilize, and by dawn it gradually began to recede. Although I had previously instructed the villagers to prepare flood defenses, the sudden and unprecedented rapid flooding was beyond expectations. There were undoubtedly many houses swept away and likely numerous drowning deaths as well. Moreover, I am deeply concerned that extensive land damage has occurred. I will investigate the details and report them later, but I am reporting this matter first. The above. April 14th Sanada Shinano-no-kami At my domain in Shinshū Matsushiro, as I previously reported, the great earthquake caused Mount Iwakura in Yamahirabayashi Village, Sarashina District, to collapse into the Sai River, creating dams. On the evening of the 13th, these dams suddenly burst, and water rushed into the river channel. From the outlet toward the villages, it broke through and overflowed the earthen embankments on both sides, then flooded the entire Kawanakajima area. From about one ri upstream of the castle town, around Yokota Village in the same district, water poured extensively into the lower reaches of the Chikuma River. The water flow was so strong that water continued to accumulate from downstream as well, causing further overflow and backflow that surged up to near the residential castle, with water levels inside the castle grounds rising higher than the surrounding land. We managed to hold it back with the flood control earthen embankments that were constructed during the Bunsei era, as previously reported to you. However, since they suffered major damage in many places, I ordered various emergency measures, and while we were preventing immediate disaster, the water receded. The castle interior narrowly avoided flooding, but the castle...
