天山先生墓碣銘
平戸 長村鑑 撰
享和三年癸亥二月二十九日、先生が亡くなった。年五十九歳であった。長崎の晧台寺内真珠院に葬られた。その翌月、訃報が江戸の客舎に届いた。私はそこで先生と親しくしていた人々に告げ、皆で泣いて悲しんだ。その後一か月余りして家からの手紙が届いた。その中に先生の書いた手紙があり、不思議に思って見ると、それは先生の筆跡であった。その手紙には「このたび漫遊して長崎に到着し、大藩の蔵奉行を掌る邸吏吉川との縁により、交流を得ることができた」とあった。

Epitaph for Master Tenzan

On the twenty-ninth day of the second month of Kyōwa 3 (1803), year of the Water Boar, the Master passed away at the age of fifty-nine. He was buried at Shinju-in within Kōdai-ji temple in Nagasaki. The following month, news of his death reached the guest quarters in Edo. I then informed those who had been on friendly terms with the Master, and we wept and mourned together. After more than a month, a letter from home arrived. It contained a letter written by the Master, which I found strange to see - it was indeed in the Master's handwriting. The letter stated: "Recently, during my travels, I arrived in Nagasaki and, through connections with the estate official Yoshikawa who manages the treasury office of a great domain, I was able to establish an exchange."
