違えたのである。また麻疹に石膏は悪いということも、俗人の言い習わしで老女少婦が聞いていることである。これは前度の流行のとき毒気が強く、必死の麻疹に石膏をやむことを得ず用いたのを見て、石膏によって死んだように心得たのである。かねて麻疹は熱毒病ゆえ石膏を用いるものということを、根気のある人や病家にて話しておくのも済世の一助である。

この他麻疹変症が色々発すれば、前に述べるごとく軽重寒熱虚実を察して療治すべきである。吉益東洞なる者は病因を論じないけれども、百病その病因を正しく糾して治方を施すことが肝要である。麻疹は気分に受けた胎毒・天疫によって表発する病であるから、変症が発するのも胎毒の軽重・表発と不表発によることである。人心の同じでないことはその面のごとくであるから、千状万態の変症が現れるであろう。いわゆる臨機応変にて治方を与えるべきことである。

This is a mistake [confusing gypsum with calomel]. Also, the saying that gypsum is bad for measles is merely a folk saying that old women and young wives have heard. This came about because during previous epidemics when the toxic qi was strong, people saw gypsum being used unavoidably in desperate measles cases and mistakenly believed that deaths were caused by the gypsum. It would be helpful for saving lives to explain beforehand to diligent people and patient families that gypsum should be used for measles since it is a heat-toxin disease.

Besides this, when various complications of measles develop, one should examine the severity, cold-heat patterns, and deficiency-excess conditions as described earlier and treat accordingly. Although Yoshimasu Tōdō does not discuss disease causes, it is essential to correctly investigate the causes of all diseases and apply appropriate treatments. Since measles is a disease that manifests on the surface due to fetal toxins and epidemic influences received in the qi aspect, the development of complications also depends on the severity of fetal toxins and whether there is proper or improper surface expression. Just as human hearts are not the same, like their faces, myriad forms of complications will appear. Treatment should be given through so-called flexible response to circumstances.
