抑（そも〳〵） 加州（かしう）江沼郡山中の出湯と申すは昔時（むかし）行基菩
薩抖擻【とそう。仏教語。煩悩を振り払って修行に励むこと】の時とかや當國（とうこく）菅生（すかふ）といふ所に奇樹陰（き々いん）
森（しん）とした雲（くも）に聳（そび）えたる社擅あり行基此所に詣
で給（たま）ひて是はいかなる神（かみ）を崇め奉るそと問給
へはかへりまかりける禰宜か答て曰くこれを
菅生天神と申す三柱の神にてかけまくも賢（かしこ）き
地神第四代彦火々出見尊左の相殿に豊玉姫命
右の相殿に彦波瀲武鸕鷀草葺不合尊をいつき
まつる是則人王の最初神武天皇の御父の神に
てましますなり三拾一代敏達天皇大内の祭場

そもそも、加賀国江沼郡山中の温泉について申し上げると、昔、行基菩薩が修行に励んでいた時のことです。この国の菅生という所に、珍しい木が木陰を作り、森として雲にそびえ立つような社がありました。行基がこの所に参詣なさって「これはどのような神を崇め奉っているのか」とお尋ねになると、帰参していた禰宜が答えて言うには「これを菅生天神と申します。三柱の神で、恐れ多くも地神第四代彦火々出見尊、左の相殿に豊玉姫命、右の相殿に彦波瀲武鸕鷀草葺不合尊をお祀り申し上げております。これはすなわち人皇の最初である神武天皇の御父神でいらっしゃいます。第三十一代敏達天皇の大内の祭場

Now then, regarding the hot springs of Yamanaka in Enuma District, Kaga Province: Long ago, when the Buddhist monk Gyōki was engaged in ascetic practice, there was a shrine in a place called Sugao in this province, where rare trees cast shadows and rose like a forest towering into the clouds. When Gyōki visited this place and asked, "What deity is worshipped and venerated here?" a shrine priest who had come to attend replied: "This is called Sugao Tenjin.
