現代語訳
新吉原は五町すべてにわたって倒壊家屋が多く、各所から一斉に火災が発生した。遊女はもちろん、客人なども多数死亡した。その中で、毎夜ここに出入りしていた按摩師たちは人数も多かったにもかかわらず、たった二人しか死ななかったという。盲目でありながら、よくも逃げ出せたものである。
遊女屋の中では、京町一丁目の岡本楼、同二丁目の松葉屋、角町の若狭屋、江戸町二丁目の岡田伊勢屋、三浦屋吉右衛門などは特に倒壊がひどく、抱えていた遊女たちも過半数が焼死した。中でも三浦屋では、上等な遊女を選んで土蔵の穴蔵に入れて助けようとしたが、火が入りみな焼け死んだとのことである。
廓内の焼死者についてのお調べによれば、その数は六百三十余人に及んだ。土蔵一か所は地震で崩れたままの状態で焼け残ったのみで、家屋については京町一丁目の下の方に二、三軒が残り、大門外の五十間道の西側の家が残ったほかは、ほとんど何も残らず焼失してしまったことは、まことに哀れに思われる。
ここで危うい命を助かる人などいないだろうなどと言われていたが、あれやこれやと皆が逃げ出して、また仮の宿の店を開き、いずれも賑わいを取り戻した。ただ、家々を見渡すと、姿海老屋と松葉屋の両家だけは姿が見えなかった。

In Shin-Yoshiwara, all five districts had many collapsed houses, and fires broke out simultaneously from various locations. Not only courtesans but also many guests perished. Among them, the blind masseurs who visited the quarter every night were numerous, yet reportedly only two of them died — remarkable that they managed to escape despite being blind.
Among the houses of pleasure, Okamoto-rō in Kyōmachi 1-chōme, Matsubaya in 2-chōme, Wakasaya in Kadochō, Okada-Iseya in Edochō 2-chōme, and Miuraya Kichiemon suffered particularly severe destruction, and more than half of their employed courtesans perished in the fires. At Miuraya in particular, they selected their finest courtesans and placed them in an underground cellar of their storehouse to save them, but fire entered and they all burned to death.
According to official investigations, the number of people who died in fires within the licensed quarter exceeded 630. Only one storehouse, which had already collapsed in the earthquake, survived the fire in its ruined state. Of the remaining structures, only two or three houses at the lower end of Kyōmachi 1-chōme survived, along with the houses on the west side of the Gojikken-dō outside the Great Gate. Everything else was utterly destroyed by fire — truly a pitiable sight.
It was said that there could be no survivors from such a disaster, yet somehow people escaped one after another and reopened temporary shops, and the quarter gradually regained its bustle. However, looking at the houses, the two establishments of Sugata-Ebiya and Matsubaya were nowhere to be seen.
