現代語訳

藻汐草序
上が下に命令を伝達することは治国の基本である。物事を弁別し人情を理解することは政治を執行する要諦である。今、蝦夷方言の書を閲覧するに、これもまた民を治める重要な手段に関わるものであり、どうして翻訳者の単なる趣味に過ぎないと言えようか。まして徳化を垂れ大業を開く時でもある。
これが上木する所以である。

Preface to Moshiogusa (A Collection of Dialect Words)
The transmission of commands from superiors to subordinates is the foundation of governing a nation. Distinguishing between matters and understanding human emotions are the essential points of executing government. Now, when I examine this book of Ainu dialect, this too relates to the crucial means of governing the people - how can it be said to be merely a translator's pastime? Moreover, this is a time for spreading virtuous transformation and opening great enterprises.
This is the reason for publishing this work.
