(Continued from previous page) ...The ninth-generation Sagami Nyūdō Sōkan (Hōjō Takatoki) was lacking in virtue, devoted himself to extravagance, and his governance was corrupt; thus the Genkō and Kenmu Disturbances arose, and for fifty successive years the clamor of battle shook the very earth. By the time of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, peace was temporarily restored, yet still it was far from tranquil; in the Meitoku era there was the rebellion of Yamana Mutsu-no-kami (Yamana Ujikiyo), causing great turmoil in the capital, and he was slain in battle near Uchino. Thereafter, the partisans of the Southern Court in Kawachi Province repeatedly rose up, and disturbances never ceased. Then there came the Uesugi and Hosokawa upheavals, and afterward Akamatsu Mitsusuke assassinated Shogun Yoshinori. Under Yoshimasa's rule, the great Ōnin-Bunmei War broke out, and from the Ōnin era to the Eiroku era, not a single day passed without battle. Around this time and before, the various lords—Shingen, Nobunaga, Kagekatsu, Hōjō, Asai, Mōri, Kikkawa, Shimazu, Amako, and others—competed against one another for supremacy. Nobunaga was assassinated by Mitsuhide; Mitsuhide in turn was killed by Hideyoshi; not long after, the Keichō Disturbance (the Battle of Sekigahara) occurred; and from around the Genna era, the realm became an age of great peace, and gratefully, all people take pride in the benevolent rule of non-interference. From the Hōgen (Disturbance) to the Keichō era spans more than five hundred years—who among the people could have devoted themselves to enjoying mathematics? (Surely no one could have.) It stands to reason that the present age ought to be more accomplished than antiquity. Although I am not well acquainted with the subject of archery, if I were to mention one or two things I have heard passed down: the tradition of archery practiced in ancient times is called the "old school" (korvū); with the bow hand (oshite) and the releasing hand (katte) well balanced, and composing oneself properly before releasing—a skilled archer, at the point where the releasing hand (katte) bends, would place a tea bowl filled with water and not spill it...
