序
東京帝國大學名譽敎授故芳賀矢一博士が、久しく東大の國語國文學講座を擔當して、多數學生の指導に任ぜ
られ、脵わが國文學界に於ける新硏究の開拓者として學界に貢獻された功績の顯著なことは、今更申すまでも
ありません。大正十一年三月病のために願に依って本官を免ぜられましたが、博士を知ると知らざるとは問は
ず、講壇から博士を失ふことを惜しまないものはありませんでした。それで博士記念のために國文學硏究の一
事業を起さうといふ議が、やがて博士の知人門下生の間に起り、十二年三月本會が出來て、資金の募集に著手
したのであります。中途大震火災の變に遭遇しましたが、幸に資を得ること金五千餘圓に達しました。そこで
實行委員は直ちに本資金及びその利子以て源氏物語の諸註集成を作成せんことを企圖し、これを目標とした
硏究を新進有爲の學者に委囑することとし、芳賀博士の贊成を得て、これを文學士池田龜鑑君に囑託すること
に決定いたしました。
池田文學士は囑を受けており日夜勵精、資料の蒐集及びその硏究に從事することになりました、かくて硏究
が漸次進むに隨つて、君は古註引くところの原文の異同に疑を抱き、先づ原典硏究の基礎を固めるのでなけれ
ば、諸註硏究の完備は期し難いことを痛感され、實行委員も亦これを容認したので、君は第一次事業として、
原典硏究に從事されることになりました。
爾來君は主力を原典の捜索、蒐集に注ぎ、廣くこれを全國に探り、得るに隨つて或は摸寫し、或は撮影して、

The distinguished achievements of the late Dr. Haga Yaichi, Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Imperial University, who for many years held the chair of Japanese Language and Literature at Tokyo University, devoted himself to guiding numerous students, and contributed to the academic world as a pioneer of new research in our national literature, need no further elaboration. In March of Taisho 11 (1922), he was relieved of his position at his own request due to illness, but whether people knew the doctor personally or not, there was no one who did not regret losing him from the lecture hall. Therefore, a proposal arose among the doctor's acquaintances and disciples to undertake a project in Japanese literary studies as a memorial to the doctor. In March of the 12th year, this society was established and began fundraising. Although we encountered the disaster of the Great Kantō Earthquake along the way, we were fortunate to raise funds amounting to over five thousand yen. The executive committee then immediately planned to create a comprehensive collection of commentaries on The Tale of Genji using this capital and its interest, and decided to commission promising young scholars to conduct research toward this goal. With Dr. Haga's approval, it was decided to entrust this work to Mr. Ikeda Kikan, Bachelor of Literature.
After accepting this commission, Bachelor Ikeda devoted himself day and night to the collection and study of materials. As his research gradually progressed, he began to doubt the textual variations in the original texts cited by the old commentaries, and came to keenly realize that without first establishing a solid foundation in source text research, complete research into the various commentaries would be difficult to achieve. The executive committee also accepted this view, so he undertook source text research as the first phase of the project.
Since then, he has concentrated his main efforts on searching for and collecting original texts, seeking them widely throughout the country, and as he obtained them, either copying or photographing them.
