此心はたごのうらのたぐひもなきを
ふねさし出してかえりみるにてうぼう
かぎりなくして心にもことばにもおよ
ばぬふじのたかねのゆきを見たるこゝろ
をおもひ入てぎんみすべしうみべの
おもしろき事をもたかねのたへなる事
をもことばにいたさずして只そのてい
ばかりをいひのべたるところもつとも

この歌の心は、田子の浦の比類のない美しさを、船を漕ぎ出して振り返って見ると、その眺望が限りなく広がって、心にも言葉にも表現しきれない富士の高峰の雪を見た時の心境を思い深く味わって吟味すべきである。海辺の美しい様子も、高峰の素晴らしい様子も、言葉で表現せずに、ただその様子だけを述べたところが最も優れている。

The heart of this poem lies in the incomparable beauty of Tago Bay. When one rows out in a boat and looks back, the vista extends endlessly, and one should deeply contemplate and appreciate the feeling of seeing the snow on Mount Fuji's peak that cannot be expressed in either heart or words. The most exquisite aspect is that without putting into words either the beauty of the seashore or the magnificence of the high peak, the poet merely describes their appearance.
