此心はあきらかなりしだい〳〵
にむかしをこひしく思ふほどに今の
ものうしと思ふじだいもこれより
のちには又こひしくてむかしかまし
にて有けるものをとしのばんずる
かとの心なり万みんのうへにある
べきうたなりなにごとも
すゑ〳〵
おとろへゆき
むかしににぬといふ

八十三番
この心は明らかである。だんだんと昔を恋しく思うほどに、今のことを嫌だと思う時代も、これより後には又恋しくなって、昔が懐かしいものであったのだと偲ばれるだろうという心である。万民の上にあるべき歌である。何事も末々は衰えていき、昔に及ばないという恨みである。

This sentiment is clear. As one gradually comes to long for the past, even the present age that one finds disagreeable will, in times to come, also become dear and nostalgic, reminding us that the past was indeed precious. This is a poem that should resonate with all people. Everything deteriorates over time, falling short of what it once was - this is the lament expressed.
