主従も悶え苦しみ、山のように落ちかかって積み重なった土をかき除けて無惨な屍を掘り出すと、まだ息のある者もいたけれども、あれこれするうちにもう息絶えてしまった。女房は痛ましくも打ち潰され、腹は脇から裂けて、中にいる子はまだ五か月ほどであったが、はらわたにまとわりつき血にまみれて流れ出てきたのを見るのは悲しいことであった。両親や舅姑が集まって「これはこれは」と言うけれども甲斐もない。ただ泣く以外に何もなく、どうにも分別のつけようがないので、家の者たちがあれこれ相談して寺に送り、一つの村里の塚の主とした。

4. The Death of a Woman in Muromachi
In Nijō Muromachi, there lived a man known as Mukade-ya (Centipede Shop) So-and-so. His wife was only seventeen years old this year when she married into the family, and not long after, she became pregnant. However, the earthquake on the first day of the month was so tremendously violent that they could not remain inside the house. Her uncle served as an attendant, and together with four maidservants, they tried to go out to the vacant lot behind the house. During this time, there was a storehouse that suddenly began to collapse, crushing her head with roof tiles, and she was crushed and buried under the falling walls. from master to servant, writhed in anguish. They cleared away the earth that had fallen and piled up like a mountain and dug out the pitiful corpses. Some still had breath in them, but while they were doing various things to help, their lives had already ended. The woman was tragically crushed, her belly split open from the side, and the child inside, only about five months along, came tumbling out entangled in entrails and covered in blood—a heartbreaking sight to behold. The parents and in-laws gathered around saying "Oh my, oh my," but it was of no avail. There was nothing to do but weep, and since there was no way to make sense of it all, the household members consulted among themselves and sent her to a temple, making her the master of a village graveyard mound.
