めつする事なしとてむかしの人の哥に
ゆるぐともよもやぬけじのかなめいし
かしまの神のあらんかぎりは
この俗哥（ぞくか）によりて地しんの記（き）をしるしつゝ名
づけて要石（かなめいし）といふならし

（龍の）頭と尻尾を一箇所にかがませて、要の石を打ち置かせなさるゆえに、どれほど揺れても人間世界が滅することはないとして、昔の人の歌に
揺らぐともよもや抜けじの要石
鹿島の神のあらん限りは
この俗謡によって地震の記録を記しつつ名づけて要石というのが慣わしである。

【Right page】
(The dragon's) head and tail are bent down in one place, and the keystone is placed there by the deity's power. Therefore, no matter how much it shakes, the human world will never be destroyed. As an ancient person's poem says:
Though it may sway, the keystone will never be pulled out
As long as the god of Kashima exists
Based on this folk song, records of earthquakes have been written and it has become customary to call it the "keystone" (kaname-ishi).
