三 下御灵（しもごりやう）にて子どもの死せし事
五月朔日は祈祷（きたう）の日なりとて諸社（しよしや）に御神楽（かぐら）御湯（みゆ）【巫女(みこ)が神前で熱湯に笹の葉をひたしてそれを身に振りかけて祈ること。】
などまいらする事いにしへよりこのかたこれあり
下御灵（しもごりやう）そも【そもそも】御湯（みゆ）まいらせ貴賤（きせん）老若（らうにやく）つどひ

五月朔日は祈祷の日であるといって、諸社で御神楽や御湯などを奉納することが昔からこの方ずっと行われている。
下御霊神社でもそもそも御湯を奉納し、身分の高い人も低い人も、老人も若者も集まって拝んでいる、その時に地震が激しく揺れ出したので、人々は非常に驚いて肝を潰した。拝殿に上がっていた者は崩れ落ち、地上にいる者は走って出ようとして押し合いもみ合い、泣き叫び何度も呼び合って、あたり一面がどよめいた。その中で年の頃七、八歳ほどになると見える男の子二人が、逃げ出すべき方角を見失い、正気を失い思慮分別もうろたえて、

どうすることもできずに恐れ悶えて石燈籠にしがみついた所に、すぐにその石燈籠が揺れて傾き、折れて倒れたので、二人の子どもはこれに打ちひしがれ、頭から手足に至るまで繋がった所がなく、ばらばらになって死んでしまったのは悲しいことであった。これはそもそもどのような人の子どもなのだろうかと、人々は恐ろしくも哀れに思って口々に言い立てた。しばらくして子どもの親が走って来たが、その顔かたちは潰れて見えないけれども、血に染まった着物は見間違えようもなくその通りであったので、母も気を失い、父も声を上げてただ泣くばかりであった。

III. The incident where children died at Shimogoryō
The first day of the fifth month is said to be a day of prayer, and it has been customary since ancient times to offer sacred kagura dance and sacred hot water ceremonies at various shrines.
At Shimogoryō Shrine as well, they were offering the sacred hot water ceremony, with people of high and low status, old and young, gathering to worship. Just at that moment, an earthquake began to shake violently, causing all the people to be greatly startled and lose their composure. Those who had climbed up to the worship hall came tumbling down, while those on the ground tried to run out, pushing and shoving against each other, crying and calling out repeatedly, creating a tremendous commotion throughout the area. In the midst of this, two young boys who appeared to be about seven or eight years old lost sight of which direction to flee, lost their senses, and became confused in their judgment.

Having no way to cope and trembling with fear, they clung to a stone lantern. Immediately, that stone lantern swayed and tilted, then broke and toppled over. The two children were crushed beneath it, and from head to hands and feet, no part remained connected - they were torn apart and died, which was truly tragic. People wondered whose children these might be, feeling both horror and pity as they spoke about it among themselves. After a while, the children's parents came running, but although their faces were crushed beyond recognition, the blood-stained clothing was unmistakably theirs. The mother lost consciousness and the father raised his voice, doing nothing but weep.
